Healthcare Programs

Edward S. Ageno School of Business

Golden Gate University offers programs in healthcare that will contribute to your professional growth in this important field, regardless of whether you require general healthcare management skills, or are interested in more specialized skills in management of healthcare information technology systems.

New Management of Healthcare Information Systems courses for Summer 2012:

ITM 396, Electronic Healthcare Records.

Taught by healthcare professional Carl Rowland, this course addresses the many complex factors involved in the federally mandated transition to electronic healthcare record systems. The IT professional needs to understand not only the systems themselves, but the complex social structure of the medical profession within which these systems are to be used. Students will address the regulatory environment driving the change to EHR systems. EHR systems also support new perspectives on competitive strategies for creating value both within an existing medical setting as well as in the larger medical arena. Students in this course are positioned to bring innovative value to Information Technology and medical business environments.

ITM 354, Healthcare Informatics, (formerly ITM 396F, Healthcare Business Modeling)

Instructor John Morales uses a custom database of public healthcare data to investigate healthcare events from a clinical perspective, including business rules, requirements and specifications. Interoperability issues (HL7 and HIPAA transactions) are addressed. There is an emphasis on structuring and analyzing data to address costs and to bring value to the organization, as well as to enhance competitive presence in the healthcare marketplace.

Instructor John Morales has over 15 years experience as a healthcare professional. Currently employed at Blue Shield of California as a senior trainer in actuarial and business intelligence, he has detailed experience in medical coding, custom configurations of systems, and is highly active in professional organizations involving medical data.
