Program Description

The Master of Science in Project and Systems Management gives you a broad base of skills information technology systems, operations processes, and project management. The degree content focuses on project and systems management skills in business settings increasingly mediated by information technology. The program is well suited for technologically-oriented students who work in industries where technology supports operations and project management functions in the business setting.

You will graduate with project and systems management skills that emphasize the use of technology in its integrated relationship with business function areas. Business expects that IT will increasingly drive business value, and your project management and operations skills will support leadership in attaining these organizational goals. Your communication skills will increase and will be directed at success in working in and among the multiple and diverse communities within the business organization

Golden Gate University is a member and Registered Education Provider (REP) for the Project Management Institute (PMI), and has introduced OP 346, Practice of Project Management, a course that will provide a comprehensive investigation and review of the content areas that form the substance of the PMI industry certification examination for Project Management Professional (PMP).
Learning Outcomes

Graduates of the MS in Project and Systems Management program will be able to:
  • Demonstrate general knowledge of business dynamic, corporate strategy, industry and stakeholders issues.
  • Demonstrate managerial skills, e.g., leadership, problem solving, communication.
  • Demonstrate the ability to utilize information technology (IT) skills in implementing and managing relationships between IT systems and business function units.
  • Demonstrate project management skills, including leadership, planning, budgeting and scheduling.
  • Demonstrate program and portfolio management skills, including understanding issues in vendor relationships, outsourcing/offshoring, purchasing and contract negotiations, as well as regulatory and compliance issues.
  • Demonstrate the ability to integrate and apply the above understandings and knowledge into the development of a major applied capstone project, in either the information technology or project management concentration.
Program Requirements

Either a minimum of three years full-time work experience in project management and/or in an IT Department, or a minimum of 30 undergraduate units in Operations, Project Management, or IT Management courses, equivalent to an undergraduate certificate in the related field.

FOUNDATION PROGRAM - 9 units

The courses in the Foundation Program should all be completed or in process before any of the 300 level Advanced Program courses are taken.

· MATH 240 Data Analysis for Managers
· MGT 210 Management Theory and Communications
· ITM 225 Management Information Systems

ADVANCED PROGRAM - 30 units

The advanced program core comprises four courses in Information Technology Management and Operations Management. There are two emphases within the advanced program, in Information Technology and Project Management. The optimum sequence is to pursue the completion of the core and elective courses simultaneously, as many elective courses are not available every term.

CORE COURSES - 12 units
· ITM 340 Managing Information Technologies (To be taken within the first 6 units of advanced program)
· ITM 344 Information Technology Governance, Portfolio and Program Management
· OP 303 Managing Innovation and Technology
· OP 340 Project Management

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY CONCENTRATION -18 units

REQUIREMENTS- 12 units

· ITM 395 Strategic Information Technology Planning, Organization and Leadership
(to be taken during the last 6 units of the concentration

Three from the following:
· ITM 345 Business Intelligence and Decision Support Systems
· ITM 310 Distributed Systems
· ITM 342 Enterprise Architecture Planning
· OP 305 Supply Chain Management for Electronic Business

ELECTIVES- 6 units

Any 2 additional 300 level courses with ITM or OP prefixes, including related internships.

PROJECT MANAGEMENT CONCENTRATION - 18 units

REQUIREMENTS- 12 units

· OP 346 Practice of Project Management (to be taken during the last 6 units of the concentration )

Three from the following:
· OP 302 Quality and Process Improvement
· OP 305 Supply Chain Management for Electronic Business
· OP 343 Project Feasibility, Planning and Control
· OP 345 Project Administration, Leadership and Team Dynamics

Electives- 6 Units

Any 2 additional 300 level courses with ITM or OP prefixes, including related internships.
