Summary: Sophia Bekele will discuss her work to promote Internet connectivity in Africa and emerging economies, and how Internet governance and the policy divide impacts the world's digital economy. She will also discuss initiatives she is leading such as the Continental Integrated Information Network (CIIN) and DotAfrica.
Details: Sophia Bekele came from Ethiopia during the country's socialist regime, attended Golden Gate University to obtain an MBA in Information Technology Management, and used the knowledge she gained to start her US based organization CBS International, a consulting firm based in California with a mission to transfer technology to emerging economies. She used Ethiopia as a base to set up her overseas operation.
Sophia has served as policy advisor to various international organizations, including ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), United Nation's Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), and Information Communications Technology (UNICT), Global Alliances for ICT Development (UNGAID) where her vision for building the next generation of the information and Internet society crystallized. Sophia is currently working with the Ethiopian government and other governments of Africa, to bring real connectivity to the regions via use of Internet.
