For more than 20 years, Poole was the Executive Director of United Public Employees, Local 1 where she organized and led the union for employees in Sacramento County and Court. During that time, she served on the Blue Ribbon panel on Civil Service Commission Reform, was  creator and  Co-Chair of the Sacramento County Workload Policy Board.  Poole has long been active on issues related to women in the workplace and advocacy for foster youth since serving as Senate President Pro Tem David Roberti's representative to the Commission on the Status of Women in the early 1980s.
