BASIC FUNCTION AND SCOPE OF JOB
Full-time PLUS instructors at Golden Gate University's San Francisco campus design and deliver non-degree-credit academic support and ESL instruction to admitted GGU students, with responsibilities including but not limited to: teaching; curriculum development; participating in ongoing PLUS activities; contributing to program growth; assisting with administrative tasks; observing, evaluating and serving as a "master teacher" for part-time instructors; advising students.

Successful PLUS instructors are enthusiastic about learning, comfortable in a graduate business school environment, interested in and capable of mastering basic business concepts and theories, and comfortable responding to non-native speakers' use of English. Newly-hired instructors face a steep learning curve and receive mentoring from veteran PLUS instructors. Instruction is based on established, original course materials and takes place in a team-teaching environment.

PLUS classes are scheduled from 9:20 until 3:00 or later, Monday through Thursday. Fridays are work days. Advising, Directed Studies and program development take place during normal business hours throughout the week. Vacation time is accrued based on university standards for staff members. Vacation is taken between terms and at the discretion of the director.
 
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Instruction: Deliver superior quality to students.
Curriculum: Organize and teach PLUS classes effectively, with goals and objectives stated in course outlines, descriptions and lesson plans; adapt to changing student and program needs; keep up to date with innovations in teaching in GGU classrooms, and implement new ideas as warranted. Incorporate online and web-enhanced instruction where possible. Commit to assessment of students, program, and instruction in a results-oriented environment.
Teaching: Provide high-quality, interactive instruction to classes of students enrolled in a combination of academic support and academic credit classes, observing PLUS policies and procedures pertaining to class length, requirements, and so on. Serve as a “master teacher” for part-time instructors including coaching and evaluation. Teach a full-time load during each of three annual PLUS trimesters. Classroom contact hours vary from a minimum of 8.75 to a maximum of 15 hours per week per term. Teach Directed Studies (individual or small group) as assigned.

Administration: Participate in necessary, ongoing, non-instructional activities.
Testing and advising: Participate in program pretests and posttests. Evaluate students as part of a team. Advise and place students into GGU classes.
Materials: Develop new materials specific to the needs of PLUS students; provide input into topics and assignments. Test and evaluate the effectiveness of instructional materials.
Meetings: Participate in meetings as scheduled.
Class Observations: Perform peer class visits to assess and maintain classroom quality. Offer suggestions for program consistency and quality.
Student Advising: Advise students individually on academic, linguistic, and other matters as needed.

Program Development: Develop activities that help the program achieve goals and set new objectives.
Program activities: Participate in program offerings that enhance the students’ experience while in PLUS.
Program growth: Make substantial contributions to the program that help expand and refine PLUS offerings and create new avenues of growth.
GGU Community outreach: Contribute to activities such as teacher workshops and online offerings that create a two-way dialogue between GGU faculty and PLUS.
 
QUALIFICATIONS
REQUIRED:

Master's degree in linguistics, education, TESL, business or the equivalent, or a doctorate in an appropriate discipline.

Minimum of five years' full-time, or full-time equivalency, teaching in a U.S. university-affiliated academic support/preparation program for non-native speakers of English, or an Intensive English Program at a U.S. university, or extensive teaching of business to international students in the U.S.

Experience with giving detailed language feedback to non-native speakers of English on both written and spoken language; for example, grammar and organization of paragraphs and research papers; grammar and pronunciation used in a presentation.

Demonstrated ability to create effective instructional materials.

Previous experience with offering non-academic services to IEP students (for example, advising).
