Last spring ABC dropped sixteen survivors on a desert island in southeast Asia.
Each week the contestants would vote one of their own off the island. The last survivor
would win one million dollars. Many of the adventures of the survivors were shown on
national tv. Some of their wranglings were not.
Within days of their arrival, Richard, Kelly, Susan, and Rudy agreed to form a voting
alliance. In essence, they agreed to block vote against an agreed upon contestant
until only the four of them were left on the island. Then each of them would be on their
Balloting was secret. That is, the contestants did not know who voted for whom. But
the tv audience got to see each individual vote.
Imagine Richard's surprise when he returned home and viewed tapes of each
episode. Kelly had voted against him on his birthday! Even though Richard ultimately
won
the contest, he now wants to sue Kelly for her betrayal. Had he known, Richard
never would have
shared the fish he caught with Kelly. And he might have voted her out
earlier. You are the judge. Who will win Richard's lawsuit against Kelly?
Why?
Kelly also voted against Susan -- and her vote was the decisive one. It resulted in Susan's ouster from the island after five weeks.
Now
Susan is suing Kelly, claiming that Kelly's vote cost her overall victory.
And
Susan
may
be right -- after all, when they returned to the US, the other contestants voted Susan Miss Congeniality at a survivor reunion telecast.
Susan is particularly pained by her early ouster from the island because she had
signed a contract to do a cameo role in a motion picture -- if and only if she were the
winner. Victory on Survivor had been the key to her future fame and fortune.

Sean, a neurologist, brought his medical kit with him to the island as his one
optional item. As the weeks passed, he noticed that Colleen had developed infected
insect bites all over her legs. Sean offered to treat Colleen's sores if she would agree
to split her eventual winnings with him. Colleen agreed -- but now one-half of the
$100,000 she won seems a little stiff for a little tube of neosporine. -

Gervase didn't know how to swim -- a real competitive disadvantage. That
weakness almost proved fatal when Gervase fell off a raft and sank like an anchor -
until Jenna jumped
in,
pulled
him out, and performed successful cpr. Gervase was so
grateful that he promised Jenna one-half of his winnings for saving his life. Now that
he is back in the US, Gervase isn't so eager to part with $10,000 and claims that he
must have lacked mental capacity due to lack of air.
