Tom Kuang was born in China, immigrated with his family to Hong Kong, and then to the United States, where he has lived since the age of seven. After graduating from high school, Tom enlisted in the US Marine Corp Reserves, spending eight months in North Carolina receiving advanced training to become a diesel mechanic. He graduated from the program with honors and received a distinguished achievement award. Tom originally enlisted for six years; however, after the events of 9/11, his contract was extended for another year.

Tom worked full-time the next three years as a network consultant, and was on duty one weekend a month and two weeks a year. He then then took a job with as a network analyst for a credit union in Northern California. In 2007, four years after his Marine Corp contract was up, Tom decided he missed serving his country and enlisted for the Air Force Reserves. Tom is a now Master Sergeant. For the past fifteen years, he has worked full-time with credit unions, moving through the ranks to become the chief technology officer / vice president of technology.

While juggling his career in the information technology field and his military reserve duties, Tom managed to take one or two classes every semester until his persistence finally earned him a degree.
