Honorees at Law Commencement 2008 Include Retired Judge and Two Noted Bay Area Litigators
The School of Law Commencement 2008 will be held on Friday, May 16, at the Nob Hill Masonic Center. This year's Commencement speaker is retired San Francisco Superior Court Judge Lee Baxter, a graduate of the Class of 1974, who will also receive an honorary Doctor of Laws degree from the university. Other honorees will include two octogenarians, both still active in the Bay Area Legal Community: Alan Simon (who received a GGU business degree in 1950 and a GGU law degree in 1959), who will receive the Judith G. McKelvey Award for Outstanding Achievement by an Alumnus; and GGU Professor of Law Emeritus Allan Brotsky, a noted civil rights attorney who will be the first recipient of the Allan Brotsky Pro Bono Award. Some 200 graduates will receive JDs at Law Commencement; another 60 will receive Master of Laws (LLM) and Scientiae Juridicae Doctor (SJD) graduate law degrees. This year's graduates include a father (SJD program) and son (JD program).

Women's Employment Rights Clinic Achieves Victory for Women Electricians
Student clinicians with the School of Law's Women's Employment Rights Clinic (WERC), litigating with Equal Rights Advocates, recently settled a gender discrimination case brought on behalf of six women electricians. The workers asserted they were targeted for layoff on the basis of their gender in violation of the state anti-discrimination law. After an Alameda County Superior Court judge rejected the employer's motion for summary judgment, the parties settled the case through mediation.

GGU Law Takes 2nd Place at Statewide Environmental Negotiations Competition
GGU Law took second place at the 2008 State Bar of California Environmental Negotiations Competition on April 4 in Los Angeles. Two teams represented the School of Law at the prestigious annual competition, which is sponsored by the State Bar's Environmental Law Section. One of the GGU teams was one of four to make it to the final round in the 20-team competition. Alumna Robin Salsburg (JD 02) coached the students.

Students in Hurrican Katrina Seminar To Discuss Research Findings at Symposium
The public is invited to a Katrina Seminar Symposium on Thursday, April 24, when law students will make presentations on their research conducted for Gulf Coast advocates. Topics include eligibility, denial, and cessation of FEMA and other assistance; habitability of FEMA trailers; and improving access to assistance and justice for non-English speakers. The symposium will take place from 11 am to 3 pm in Room 3214 at the School of Law. For information contact rvancleave@ggu.edu.

US News Ranks GGU School of Law Among Nation's Most Diverse
In its 2009 edition of "America's Best Graduate Schools," US News and World Report lists GGU School of Law as one of the nation's 73 most diverse accredited law schools.
