Golden Gate University School of Law - 1980-1999

1980The Law School joins the Association of American Law Schools (AALS).
1981Judith McKelvey steps down as Dean.

Neil Levy is appointed Interim Dean.
1982Jack Wilson is appointed Dean.
1985The Law School inaugurates a Midyear Admission Program through which students may begin their study of law in January, instead of waiting until August.
1988Jack Wilson steps down as Dean.

Anthony Pagano is appointed Dean.
1989October 17: Earthquake damages the five-story building at 536 Mission Street. Law School faculty and staff move to nearby office buildings until 1997.


Scaffolding blocks the main entrance to the university after the 1989 earthquake.
1990The International Legal Studies Program is established.
1992The Law School holds its first overseas summer program in Bangkok, Thailand.

1993The Women's Employment Rights Clinic is established.
1994The Environmental Law & Justice Clinic is established.
1995The LL.M. Program in International Legal Studies is established.

The Law School's LL.M. Program in Taxation expands to Los Angeles.
1998The Law School establishes the Honors Lawyering Program (Integrated Professional Apprenticeship Curriculum-IPAC).

The S.J.D. Program in International Legal Studies is established. Two new LL.M. programs begin: Environmental Law and United States Legal Studies.

Peter Keane is appointed Dean, starting January 1, 1999.

1999December 2: Golden Gate holds its first swearing-in ceremony for Golden Gate law graduates who recently passed the California bar. This event enables graduates to take the California Bar oath with fellow graduates instead of in a mass ceremony with all bar-passers in the region.
