LLM in United States Legal Studies Program

The LLM in United States Legal Studies Program serves law graduates and attorneys from the US and abroad. The typical JD graduate or lawyer from the United States joins the program for professional breadth and enrichment or to concentrate in an area of law study.
Since 1997, when the program began with five students, nearly 200 foreign lawyers and law graduates have undertaken the LLM in US legal studies at Golden Gate. Most come to gain a basic understanding of US law, with many deciding to take a bar examination in California, New York, or one of the other states that permit foreign law graduates who have studied US law to do so.
In addition to bar preparation, the LLM in US legal studies program offers the foreign lawyer or law graduate opportunities to work in a US legal setting. Placements include:
- The on-site Environmental Law & Justice Clinic and Women's Employment Rights Clinic
- Field clinical placements in law offices, courts, and public agencies in San Francisco and the Bay Area
- Paid law clerk positions both during and after law study through our curricular practical training (CPT) and optional practical training (OPT) programs.
The Golden Gate University Law
Career Services Office assists students in preparing resumes and identifying employment goals. The office maintains job listings for legal positions.
