Credit and Enrollment

Enrollment Limits
  • The program will be limited to 60 US/Canadian students and 40 EU students.
  • It is anticipated that most EU students participating in the program will be French nationals but that several other European countries will be represented.
  • The Introduction to French and European Union law (June 2-12) (2 credits) will be limited to 60 students (US and Canadian students only).
  • The five specialized comparative law courses (June 15-June 27) will be limited to 25 students each. Some students may not receive their first choice from among these five courses.
Credits
  • US/Canadian students will earn 4 semester units of credit from Golden Gate University School of Law.
  • EU students may arrange for credits through UPX.
  • Participating in a foreign summer study abroad program generally does not accelerate law school graduation. Students interested in acceleration should contact their home schools to review this issue in light of ABA Standard 305, Interpretation 4.
Student Performance and Grading
  • Students will be expected to attend all class meetings, to prepare for class by reading the assigned material, and to participate in class discussions.
  • Grades will be based on a two-hour in-class exam administered on the final Friday of each session.
  • GGU permits faculty to award the following grades: A, A-, B, B-, C, C-, D, F
  • No mandatory grading curve will apply to these courses.
  • Acceptance of any grade or credit for any course taken in the program is subject to a determination by the student's home school.

Tuition and Costs

US and Canadian students pay $6,400 (US), which includes:
  • Tuition for 4 semester units of credit at $1,150/unit (total = $4,600)
  • Room at CIUP and two nights at the IBIS Hotel. (Students finding their own housing may reduce payment by $1,300).
  • Field trip to Brussels ($250)
  • Receptions with French lawyers, judges and government officials
  • A Paris transit pass
  • Books and photocopied course materials ($250)
  • French accident and liability insurance
The $250 non-refundable application fee will be credited toward tuition.

Students are responsible for:
  • Their own transportation to and from Paris.
  • Nearly all meals. Subsidized student meals are available at CIUP and UPX for under $6.
EU students should contact Professor Anne Deysine of University of Paris X for tuition and costs.
Send her an e-mail message at anne.deysine@u-paris10.fr.

Schedule of Payments

A $250 (US) non-refundable fee must accompany the application.

Payment in full, or a letter from the student's home school's Financial Aid Office stating that the student has applied for and been approved for financial aid to pay for the program, is due by April 21, 2009.

No credits will be awarded until payment in full is received.

Access for People with Disabilities

The classrooms and law library at UPX are accessible for people using wheelchairs, as are some of the public rooms at CIUP. There are a limited number of accessible rooms available at CIUP, which may be reserved if available. French consciousness of the importance of providing access to people with disabilities is similar to that in the United States. Paris, however, is an old city, and its cobblestone streets and sidewalks, which often lack curb cuts, can be very challenging to navigate. Students with disabilities who wish to enroll in the program may wish to consult with the program directors regarding their specific needs to be sure they can be accommodated.

Refund Policy

The $250 application fee (due with the application) is not refundable, but it will be applied to the program fee. Except in the case of cancellation of the program, or academic disqualification from GGU, payments made or due on or after April 21, 2009, are not refundable. Students who cancel after April 21 will still be required to pay $2,000 to cover our housing and administrative costs.

Golden Gate University students who are academically disqualified after arriving in Paris may opt to remain in the program or withdraw. Students who withdraw will receive no refund on their housing charge, and must vacate the CIUP campus; however, students will receive a refund of tuition minus a $700 charge.

Cancellation Policy

Circumstances under which the program is subject to cancellation:
  • If the program is substantially under-enrolled, or if travel to France is deemed unsafe for US citizens, the program will be canceled. In the event of a cancellation, all students and applicants will receive immediate notification and a full refund within 20 days. We will use our best efforts to help place interested students in other programs.
  • If Paris becomes an "area of instability" as defined by the United States State Department, students will be permitted to withdraw from the program. Students will receive a refund of fees paid, except for room payments utilized prior to the date Paris was declared to be an "area of instability."
  • If, prior to the commencement of the program, a US State Department Travel Warning is issued for France, all registrants will be notified promptly of the warning and given an opportunity to withdraw from the program. Students who withdraw shall receive a full refund of all monies advanced within 20 days after withdrawal. In the event the program is canceled, students shall receive a full refund of all monies advanced within 20 days after the cancellation. If, during the course of the program, a US State Department Travel Warning is issued for France, students will be notified promptly of the warning and given an opportunity to withdraw from the program. Students who withdraw under these circumstances will receive a refund of all fees paid except for room payments utilized prior to the date of withdrawal. If the program is terminated, fees will be refunded, except for room payments utilized prior to the date the Travel Warning is issued.
