Marie Appel is the Supervising Attorney of the Justice & Diversity Center’s Medical-Legal Project and Consumer Project.  At JDC, Ms. Appel provides free legal assistance to low-income clients through direct representation, and through training and supervision of volunteer attorneys and law students.  Prior to joining JDC in 2012, Ms. Appel litigated consumer class actions for over 15 years in both state and federal courts.  Her work has included certification of a nationwide class of military veterans as well as writs and appeals.

As part of her advocacy commitment, Ms. Appel is involved in consumer policy groups to shape laws protecting consumers, especially those who are low-income.  Her participation has included support letters for pending legislation and an amicus brief to the California Supreme Court dealing with misleading advertising.  In addition, she has a long history of volunteering, first with the AIDS Legal Referral Panel, and later with JDC, firmly believing in the value of experiential learning as well as giving back to the community.

Ms. Appel has been an adjunct professor at Golden Gate University School of Law since 2011 teaching the Consumer Rights Clinic and, more recently, first-year Legal Research and Writing.  Ms. Appel received a B.A. in French from San Francisco State University and her J.D. from the University Of San Francisco School Of Law.
