What You Should Know Before Dropping a Course
LAW SCHOOL STUDENTS,

Financial Aid Recipients
You must contact a Financial Aid adviser BEFORE dropping if:
- The remaining number of units after the drop will be below the amount for which you were packaged; OR
- Less than 60% of the term has passed and the remaining number of units after the drop will not qualify you as a half-time student (defined below):
- Undergraduate - 6 units (must be registered in more than one 8-week term)
- Graduate - 4 units
- Doctoral - 3 units
60% of a trimester is nine weeks; 60% of a ten-week term is six weeks; 60% of an eight-week term is five weeks. To recall when the term began, consult the
Academic Calendar.
In both of these instances, some or all of your loans will be returned to your lender. Call the Financial Aid Office at 415-442-7270 or e-mail
finaid@ggu.edu before proceeding.
International Students
You must contact an International Admissions & Advising counselor BEFORE dropping a course. The counselor will need to determine if the drop will put you in violation of US immigration regulations. Contact your
international counselor.

Requests for drops or changes to audit status will not be processed after these deadlines. If you wish to withdraw from a class afterwords, you may ask your instructor to assign you a "W" (Withdrawal) mark, which will appear on your transcript, but will not affect your grade-point average. The instructor has the right to decline such a request. Students who stop attending and do not request a "W" are graded as follows:
- Undergraduate students whose cumulative grade-point average is less than 2.00 ("C") will be assigned an "F" (Failure). Students with grade-point averages more than 2.00 may be assigned a "W".
- Graduate students whose cumulative grade-point average is less than 3.00 ("B") will be assigned an "F" (Failure). Students with grade-point averages more than 3.00 may be assigned a "W".
If you are an international student in F-1 or J status, units with grades of "W" are not included in calculating unit load for immigration purposes. Before requesting a "W", contact your
international counselor.
Refunds
If you drop before the refund deadline, the tuition charge for the course will be reversed, and your account will be credited. This credit will be used toward your future registration charges. If instead, you would like this money refunded to you, please send a request to Student Accounting Services either via fax to 415-442-7819 or via e-mail to
sas@ggu.edu.
If you are dropping after the refund deadline, and can show evidence of serious, unforeseen circumstances beyond your control which prevented you from continuing with the course or paying its tuition, you may still be eligible for a refund. Submit a
Student Financial Petition to the Office of Student Accounting Services.

Dropping Law School Courses
Financial Considerations
If you choose to drop a Law School course, you are subject to the
Law School's Withdrawal Tuition Credit Policy. Consequently, the tuition charges for courses from which you withdraw after the end of the second week of the term will not be credited as a result of withdrawal. Please refer to the
Law School's Academic Calendar to determine the "last day to drop courses without tuition charge" (i.e., the drop deadline) for the term in which you are enrolled.
Financial Aid Recipients
If you drop units and end up enrolled in fewer units than you were packaged for, a portion of your Stafford, Perkins or alternative loans may have to be returned to your lenders. This may result in a balance due on your account if you received a refund check. If you fall below half-time status, as defined per the
Law School's Enrollment Status Classifications, prior to the 60 percent point in the term, some or all of your funds will have to be returned to your lenders. Please notify the Law Financial Aid Office immediately of any reduction in units by sending a message to
lawfao@ggu.edu.
Drop and Withdrawal Deadlines
Other than first year JD students, Law School students do not need permission to drop or withdraw from courses provided they do so prior to the date of the last class meeting for the course, or the last day of instruction for the term for courses that do not have class meetings, such as independent study courses. However, you may not withdraw from courses via GGU4YOU after the "drop" deadline. Instead, you must submit a
Schedule Change Request form. To withdraw from courses after the "end of instruction" deadlines you also must obtain the approval or the associate dean for student services or LLM program director, as appropriate. Courses from which you withdraw are recorded with a "W" (Withdrawal) notation and will appear on your transcript but will not affect your GPA. If you do not drop or withdraw from a course, and do not complete it or receive approval for an incomplete, you may be assigned the grade of "WF" (Withdrew Failing) that has the same effect on your GPA as a grade of "F."
Refunds
If you drop a "regular" course before the end of the second week of the term (or an "intensive" course before the third class meeting) the tuition charge for the course will be reversed, and your account will be credited. This credit will be used toward your future registration charges. If instead you would like this money refunded to you, please contact the Office of Student Accounting Services at 415-442-7839 or
sas@ggu.edu.
If you are withdrawing after the "drop" deadline, and can show evidence of serious, unforeseen circumstances beyond your control which prevented you from continuing with the course, you may still be eligible for a reversal of charges. Submit a
Financial Petition to the Law School Registrar's Office.
International Students
Do NOT proceed until you have discussed this drop with an adviser in the Law School's International Student Services Office. The adviser will need to ensure you will not be out of compliance with US Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement regulations as a result of dropping courses. Call 415-442-6501 or e-mail
lawiss@ggu.edu for assistance.
