CLEP Testing
Taking CLEP exams at GGU
The University administers the College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) exams to help GGU students achieve their educational and career goals by earning credit for sufficient demonstration of subject-area knowledge. At this time, we only offer CLEP testing for enrolled GGU students. Exams are offered only once per month. For more information on registration and course equivalencies, please see the CLEP Bulletin of Information and FAQ below or call
Katy Rowe in Academic Affairs at 415-442-6569.
PLEASE NOTE: Also beginning July 1, 2010, the ENGL 1A equivalency exam has changed. Please see the Bulletin of Information for more details on the new exam. This new exam is 120 minutes long, while all other exams are 90 minutes long. You can download a free ($10 value) study guide from CLEP for this new exam, called College Composition, by clicking here.

CLEP Testing FAQ
I am not a GGU student - can I take a CLEP exam at GGU?
No, we are a restricted testing center and only offer exams to enrolled GGU students. You can search for an open testing center
here.
Which CLEP test(s) can I take for credit at GGU?
GGU awards credit for all CLEP exams for which you earn a passing score. You can find GGU course equivalencies for each exam in the CLEP Bulletin of Information, posted above.
Do I have to take my exam at the GGU campus?
GGU students may take CLEP exams on campus, or you may take them at any open testing center. The College Board maintains a list of testing centers on their website, but many (including GGU) only offer exams to their own students. You can search for a testing center
here. However, if you choose to take your exam at a different location, you will have to order an additional official score report and have it sent to the GGU
Office of Records and Registration for an additional charge of $15. You can order additional score reports
here.
How do I register for my exam?
Fill out the last two pages of the CLEP Bulletin of Information and turn them in to the Office of Academic Affairs' CLEP administrator, Katy Rowe, in any of the ways listed below.
- In person - 6th floor in the 536 Mission St. building (Suite 6217). Phone: 415-442-6569
- Fax: 415-543-3725
- Email: krowe@ggu.edu
When are the exams given?
CLEP exams are usually scheduled for the last Friday of each month, except in months where GGU holidays conflict. You can find the scheduled dates on each term's printed course schedule or on the CLEP Bulletin of Information, posted above.
Where is the CLEP lab?
Room 4214 in the 526 Mission St. building, on the 4th floor, next to the student computer lab.
How much does it cost to take a CLEP exam?
CLEP exams are $77 each, and GGU charges an administration fee of $15 each, so the total cost for one exam is $92.
How many exams can I take in one day?
There are two testing times on each day the exam is offered at the San Francisco campus: 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM. You may schedule one exam for each time slot, depending on availability.
When will I know if I passed?
At the end of your exam, you will have the choice to either see your score or cancel it. If you decide not to cancel your results, you will see the results of the exam at that time. Your score report will be printed, and you will be able to take it with you on the test day. However, this is not an official score report, so you will not receive credit for the course equivalencies until your official report is received from the College Board, which will automatically be sent to the GGU
Office of Records and Registration. The one exception is for exams with essay components because it takes about 6 weeks for the essay to be scored. CLEP will mail your official score report to both you and GGU once the scoring process is complete.
How do I get my official scores sent to GGU if I took my test somewhere else?
If you take your CLEP exam at a non-GGU testing location, you will need to order an additional score report from the College Board and have it sent directly to GGU. You can order additional score reports
here.
I can't make it to an exam I've scheduled - what should I do?
If you notify the CLEP administrator in advance, you can usually reschedule to a later exam date without any extra charge. If you do not notify us in advance of your absence, you will have to pay another $15 administration fee to schedule the exam again for another date.
Can I retake an exam that I don't pass?
Yes, but you must wait AT LEAST SIX MONTHS. If you retake an exam within six months of failing it, your score will be reported as canceled. You will not receive a refund, and your score will not count.
What should I bring to the test?
You should only bring a pencil to your exam. You will not be allowed to use your own calculator, cell phone, or PDA. If the exam allows a calculator, there will be an electronic calculator provided within the exam software.
How many exams can I take for GGU credit?
There is no limit on the number of tests you can take for GGU course credit. You should just be sure that you are taking exams that will grant credit for courses that you need. Many are only equivalent to general elective, so you should be sure to consult with your academic advisor when considering taking exams that do not meet specific GGU course requirements.
How should I study for the test? What topics do the exams cover?
For general information on the topics covered in each exam, click
here. You can purchase and download a study guide for each individual exam
here. For a list of recommended study materials from the College Board, click
here.
I'm graduating this month and I still need to take my exam. Will I graduate on time?
Probably not. You need to take your exam AT LEAST six weeks before you need to have the credit posted on your transcript. It takes the College Board about six weeks to send your official score reports to GGU. All transfer (including CLEP) credit must be posted to your transcript before the last day of the term in which you plan to graduate. If your CLEP transcript arrives after the end of your intended graduation term, your degree will not be awarded until the following term.
