Golden Gate University MFT Trainee Internship
Golden Gate University has been approved by the State of California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS) to offer an MA in Psychology with a Marriage Family Therapy (MFT) concentration that meets the educational requirements for licensure.MFT Psychology students will ultimately apply for their therapist's license from the State of California. Golden Gate University is therefore required to strictly follow and uphold the BBS standards of training. Click here for BBS Website and for more information about licensing requirements.You are required by the BBS and also GGU to complete 6 units of internship training. Specifically:
- These 6 units must be acquired over at least 2 trimesters, and may be completed in up to 6 trimesters.
- You must provide a total of at least 150 hours of face-to-face therapy, 25 hours for each semester unit earned.
- The internship site must be approved by Golden Gate University.
- The internship site must provide appropriate BBS approved supervision. At a minimum, 1 hour of individual and 1 hour of group supervision for every 10 hours of therapy conducted by the student.
- You must complete Psych 320 and Psych 326 (or have received written approval from the department chair) before beginning an internship.
Procedure
1. Meet with Department Chair, Kit Yarrow, to discuss the process and define your goals. Begin this planning several months in advance of your anticipated start date.2. Explore your placement options through flyers and posters available in the Psychology Department3. Apply for internships, interview and find a placement.4. Obtain special registration approval and BBS forms from Dr. Yarrow. You may also download these forms here:
5. Return your signed internship contracts to Golden Gate University within 30 days of the start of your internship.6. At the end of each academic semester make sure Dr. Yarrow receives an evaluation of your work from your supervisor. This may be delivered via email to kyarrow@ggu.edu, by phone to 415 442-6517, or by mail to Golden Gate University. Also submit a copy of your BBS Summary of Hours sheet, signed by your supervisor.7. After all 6 units have been completed a formal Golden Gate University evaluation form must be filled out and submitted. You must also submit a copy of all of your BBS Summary of Hours sheets documenting 150 hours of face-to-face therapy.
