Writing Resources



The OWL Tutors routinely review other OWLS and writing resources on the Internet, looking for helpful, informative, and fun web sites. Below is a compilation of the OWL'S Best Bets:
  • Guide to Grammar and Writing »
    This site is created by Capital Community-Technical College and has a number of great features. It's similar to a grammar handbook, with information on Sentence Level issues (verbs, punctuation, clauses) and Paragraph and Essay Level issues. It also has Interactive Quizzes and an "Ask Grammar" feature which allows you to submit a question about English grammar or usage.
  • Hacker Handbook Home Page »
    Many GGU students are familiar with Diana Hacker's A Writer's Reference. Now they can access both this text and her other 3 texts online. This site provides helpful information on many issues, from grammar, to mechanics, to documentation, including a section called "Research and Documentation Online."
  • Purdue University »
    An award-winning site, Purdue offers a variety of resources for you, including handouts. It also has a Business Writing section , with information on general business writing issues, such as memos, letters, and resumes.
  • Guide for Writing Research Papers »
    "Guide for Writing Research Papers" offers information on both MLA and APA documentations styles, using a Questions and Answer format. Scroll down to "Students' Questions About References" for answers regarding most documentation style issues. This Hartford Capital Community College web site also offers links to other useful writing sites.
  • Online! A Reference Guide to Using Internet Sources »
    Offers "4 styles for citing online sources." It is a complete resource for most documentation styles, including APA and MLA, with excellent navigation and examples.
  • Karin's ESL Partyland »
    Here you can take "over 75 inter-active quizzes," get information on TOEFL or take TOEFL practice quizzes, chat with other students, or visit the "Learning Pages" for information on dating and relationships, food, movies, and travel.
  • Strunk & White's Elements of Style »
    This classic handbook, written in 1918, covers the basics of the English language and is now available online. Check it out!
  • The Internet Public Library »
    The first public Internet library, this site provides numerous resources for students, researchers, and librarians.
  • Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary »
    Students can search the Collegiate Dictionary and Thesaurus, play word games, or browse the book store. A fun and helpful site.
