Student Checklist for Submitting Grade Grievances

Please utilize this checklist before submitting your grade grievance.
  1. Criteria
    Please check one of the following reasons for submitting your grade grievance:
    1. Instructor deviated from written grading policies outlined in the course syllabus.
    2. The mathematical means by which a final course grade was calculated was not consistent with policies outlined in the course syllabus (including factual and calculation errors).
    3. Deviation from University policies pertaining to grading.
    4. The final course grade was influenced by factors other than published criteria (i.e. decision was discriminatory).
    5. Factual errors or errors in judgment regarding the academic quality of student's work.
  2. Review Process
    Students must speak with the instructor before filing a grade grievance. You may contact the Program Coordinator of the Department that offered the course to get information on how to contact an instructor.
    1. Please make the following attempts to contact the instructor before submitting your grievance:
      1. Called instructor on telephone
      2. Sent email to instructor
      3. Sent a letter to instructor
      4. Requested in-person meeting with instructor
    2. Has the instructor responded to your inquiries?
      1. Yes (if yes, attach all records of correspondence with instructor.)
      2. No
    3. Have you spoken with the chairperson of the department that offers the course?
      1. Yes
      2. No (if no, must speak with chairperson before submitting grievance)
    4. Have you enclosed copies of all supporting documentation for your grievance including exams, quizzes, reports, syllabi, etc.) for review by the Grade Grievance Committee.
      1. Yes
      2. No (if no, must state reason for lack of supporting documentation)
In accordance with the Grade Grievance Policy a response should be issued within 20 business days from the day the grievance was received by the Committee. The submission of the grievance is the students' opportunity to persuade the Committee that the student deserved a grade other than the one received. The decision rendered by the Committee is final and not subject to further appeal.
