Testing Instructions
- Please bring a photo I.D. to the Undergraduate Programs suite, room 4337, at the San Francisco campus when you come in to take your test.
- To take the test remotely, please first read CyberCampus' information on proctored exams. Once you have an approved proctor, please send your proctor's contact information to undergrad@ggu.edu and your planned test date and time. We will send your proctor instructions and your test.
- Regardless of your degree level (undergraduate or graduate) your test is given on a computer, and will ask you to read a short article and respond in an essay. You are given 90 minutes to do so, and an extra five minutes to fill in your personal contact information.
- There is no practice material available. The best way to prepare, however, is to understand how your essay will be evaluated. Please read the relevant evaluation criteria here.
- Please note that while we prefer you take your test on a day and time listed above, we can be flexible if necessary.
Please call 415-442-6565 or email us for more information or to register for a test.
Undergraduate English Requirement
All degree-seeking undergraduate students must complete their English basic proficiency requirements of ENGL 1A and ENGL 1B within their first 27 units at Golden Gate University. These courses must be taken in sequence and may not be taken simultaneously.
All students needing to take ENGL 1A must take Golden Gate University's Undergraduate English Placement test. Students who do not place into ENGL 1A with the English placement test must satisfactorily complete the prescribed pre-ENGL 1A Writing Workshop sequence of ENGL 10A and ENGL 10B.
Graduate Writing Proficiency Requirement
Golden Gate University seeks to graduate students with the writing skills necessary for successful professional careers. Students admitted to an MBA degree program and some MS degree programs are required to meet the Graduate Writing Proficiency Requirement in one of the following ways:
- Achieve a score of 4.5 or above on the Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) section of the GMAT.
- Demonstrate adequate writing proficiency on GGU's Graduate Writing Proficiency Test.
- Successfully complete Golden Gate University's ENGL 201 Graduate Writing course.
If you do not have a sufficient GMAT AWA score, you must take the proficiency test. Passing the test will result in fulfilling the writing requirement. Not passing the test will require you take ENGL 201.
Students must complete the ENGL 201 requirement within the first nine units of their degree. Students may not continue their enrollment past nine units unless they have completed this requirement. ENGL 201 may be taken concurrently with other courses, except for those courses which list ENGL 201 as a prerequisite.
