Undergraduate English Placement Test

All degree-seeking undergraduate students must complete their English basic proficiency requirements of ENGL 1A and ENGL 1B within their first 27 units at Golden Gate University. These courses must be taken in sequence and may not be taken simultaneously.

All students needing to take ENGL 1A must take Golden Gate University's English placement test. Students who do not place into ENGL 1A with the English placement test must satisfactorily complete the prescribed pre-ENGL 1A Writing Workshop sequence of ENGL 10A and ENGL 10B.

The placement test asks students to read a short article and respond in a short essay. Students are given 90 minutes to read the article and write an essay. Test Criteria

Graduate Writing Proficiency Test

Golden Gate University seeks to graduate students with the writing skills necessary for successful professional careers. The university requires students admitted to an MBA degree program and some MS degree programs to meet the Graduate Writing Proficiency Requirement, ENGL 301: Graduate Writing II.

Students must complete the ENGL 301 requirement within the first nine units of their degree. Students may not continue their enrollment past nine units unless they have completed this requirement.

The Graduate Writing Proficiency Requirement can be met in the following ways:
  • Achieve a score of 3.5 or above on the Analytical Writing Assessment section of the GMAT.
  • Demonstrate adequate writing proficiency on the Graduate Writing Proficiency Test.
  • Successfully complete Golden Gate University's ENGL 301 Graduate Writing II course.
Students who have not completed the Graduate Writing Proficiency Requirement with a sufficient GMAT score must take the proficiency test. Based on the results of this test students will either be waived from ENGL 301 or required to take the course.

ENGL 301 may be taken concurrently with other courses, except for those courses which list ENGL 301 as a prerequisite.

The proficiency test asks students to read a short article and respond in a short essay. Students are given 90 minutes to read the article and write an essay. Test Criteria
