Who works in The Writing Center?
Writing Center tutors are professionals who have earned or are in the process of earning a graduate degree in English and have several years of tutoring or teaching experience. Some tutors also teach at GGU.
What is the purpose of The Writing Center?
The Writing Center is a support tool for students who want help improving their writing, reading, or speaking skills. Any student enrolled in a GGU class can use our services.
Do I have to make an appointment?
Students can see a tutor by booking an appointment or by dropping-in. To do either, stop by room P-25, Plaza Level, 536 Mission St., San Francisco. Or see the online
Tutoring Schedule.
Thirty minutes.
How should I prepare for my tutorial?
Bring your assignment and your draft, preferably typed and doublespaced, and specific questions you have. Prioritize your concerns, as the tutor may not be able to address every concern you have in thirty minutes. Try to book an appointment well ahead of the assignment's due date so you have time to revise and bring the revision back to the Center.
Why won't the tutor correct my paper?
The Writing Center is a learning tool, not a repair shop. We teach you how to identify your weaknesses and suggest ways to improve your writing. We do not edit.
What if the Writing Center is busy and I can't get an appointment and my paper is due that night?
Plan ahead so you don't find yourself in that position. Schedules are posted one week in advance. Try to anticipate when you'll need to work with a tutor and book in advance.
Isn't the Writing Center just for students with poor English skills?
No, writers at all levels benefit from one-on-one feedback.
Can I bring an assignment from a class other than English?
Yes, we will address language issues in assignments from any discipline.
