FINDING BOOKS

Checking Out Books

New Books

You can see a list of books the library has acquired in the last six months using a service called LibraryThing. Books can be sorted by topic, title, author, date published, and other criteria. You can also check the GOLDPAC catalog to see if the book is available. When you see: "GGULibrary has a suggested style for viewing this library (use it)"--please click on "use it."

How do I know what books you have in the library?

All of the books the library has are listed in a database called the library catalog, named GOLDPAC. GOLDPAC, includes listings for all the books, journal titles, reports, conference proceedings, dissertations, and reserve materials available at Golden Gate University. You can search these listings online through our website: The GGU Library Online Catalog (GOLDPAC).

The Library catalog can also connect you to some of our Electronic Books (E-books) and Course Reserves. For more information, please visit the Find:E-Books page or the the Find:Course Reserves page.

How do I find books on my topic?

To find books on your topic, you can search the catalog using Keywords or Library of Congress Subject Headings. A keyword is a word that describes what you are looking for. Most web search engines (like Google or Yahoo) search the web using keywords. A Library of Congress Subject Heading is a word that librarians have agreed to use when describing a topic or subject, and each book in the catalog will list the Subject Headings related to that book. To search using Keywords:
1. Go to GOLDPAC
2. Click on Advanced Keyword or Simple Keyword
3. Type in the word or words you want to search

You will get a list of titles that include the words you searched for, with the newest books listed first. To search using Subject Headings:
1. Go to GOLDPAC
2. Click on Subject Heading
3. Type in the Subject Heading you want to search

For help finding out what Subject Headings are good for your search, please ask a librarian. You can also start your search using Keywords, and once you find a book that matches your topic use the subject headings for that book to find others like it. For more advanced searching methods and techniques, please contact a librarian via email askalibrarian@ggu.edu or calling the Reference Desk at 415-442-7244.

I know what book I want; how can I tell if the library has it?
