If your paper has many law or legal references use The Blue Book: A Uniform System of Citation.Do not underline or enclose in quotation marks the titles of laws, acts and similar documents in either the text or the list of works cited. While lawyers use many abbreviations, when using MLA you would only use the most common abbreviations. Some of these are:USC for United States Code
US for United States
Sec for Section
Pub. L. for Public Law
Stat. for Statutes at Large
USPQ for United States Patent Quarterly
Super. for Superior
Ct. for Court
Names of law cases are similarly abbreviated - Brown v. Board of Ed. for Oliver Brown versus the Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas, but the first important word of each party's name is always spelled out. Names of law cases are underlined or italicized in the text of the paper but not in the bibliographic entry. A law case would also include the volume, the page, the name of the court that decided the case and the year of the decisionStevens v. National Broadcasting Co. 148 USPQ 755. CA Super. Ct. 1966.
