UNIVERSITY LIBRARY OFFERS NEW ACCOUNTING DATABASE

Striving to meet the demand of accounting students and faculty, the library is pleased to announce a new database for all Golden Gate University students, faculty and staff. Accounting Research Manager (ARM) fulfills a growing need for the university community's accounting research needs. Produced by CCH, a recognized leader in the accounting field, ARM's main feature is its library of full text authoritative accounting literature. It contains the full-text of the most important documents produced by the FASB, AICPA, EITF, and IASB. In addition, ARM contains an extensive topic list where users can retrieve a list of all relevant literature and documents on particular subjects as well as sections on interpretations and examples of particular situations.

If you are a current accounting student or faculty member, ARM should become a necessary tool in your academic career. As an electronic database, Accounting Research Manager provides all GGU students access to the most important accounting and auditing literature regardless of physical location. For questions on this or any other library resource, please contact the University Library Reference Desk at 415-442-7244 or webster@ggu.edu.

NEW FOOD and DRINK POLICY in the GGU UNIVERSITY LIBRARY

The library is pleased to announce that a new food and drink policy has been implemented in order to promote a friendly and inviting study space to all of our visitors.

While food is not permitted in the library, library visitors are allowed to bring drinks in covered containers.

We hope library visitors who enjoy beverages in the library will take care to avoid spills. In case of an accidental spill, visitors are invited to notify library staff (at Circulation or Reference Desk) so that it can be cleaned up as quickly as possible. We will have cleaning supplies to ensure easy cleanups.

This policy is meant to promote a welcoming environment for research and study to the GGU community. Restrictions on the consumption of food and drink are necessary because their presence can potentially damage Library property. If not discarded properly, food and drink can invite pest infestation that can cause widespread damage to the Library's equipment and print collections.

Please keep this in mind as you enjoy your covered drinks in the library and ask us if you have any questions or concerns.

STRATEGIES FOR MANAGING THE STUDENT LIFECYCLE

The University Library is hosting a viewing of the Campus Technology Webinar "Strategies for Managing the Student Lifecycle" August 16, 2006 at 11 a.m. in room 3201. Please join us if you are interested. You can also register to view this webcast from your desktop. Please contact Janice Carter jcarter@ggu.edu for more information.

The University Library Staff is hosting this viewing as a current awareness service to the University Community, in support of the University's Core Initiatives, because we have found that webinars similar to this one often include useful strategic information for consideration as well as technical details. We are not advocating or recommending any specific strategic approaches or technology products.

The Update is a regular feature of the University Library's website, accessible from the University Library home page. You may request to receive the monthly newsletter via our mailing list. To be added to this list, please contact Alice at adietrich@ggu.edu.

BACK ISSUES of

SITE OF THE MONTH
Bay Nature
http://www.baynature.com/
With less than two months of summer remaining, you can be an active outdoors lover or armchair nature enthusiast with Bay Nature at www.baynature.com. Many articles from the quarterly magazine are available for free and the website provides a multitude of features, including links for camping info, a calendar of nature events in the San Francisco Bay Area and links relating to nature, ecology, and conservation.
The Ask the Naturalist feature from the magazine will provide you with answers to questions such as: "Why do mushrooms come in so many shapes and colors," "What is the difference between bird songs and bird calls?" and "Why are banana slugs so slimy?" A guide to spring wildflower viewing in the Bay Area looks like a colorful feature and who can resist a feature article entitled, "Speak of the Devil" in the July-September 2006 issue?

COURSE RESERVES MADE EASY!

Downloads of course reserve materials from home or work is easy. All it takes is for a faculty member to send our Access Services Librarian, Gilles Poitras, a list of articles they wish to place on electronic reserve for their class.

In most cases we link directly to the article in one of the databases the Library subscribes to. If the article is not in one of the databases we shall make a PDF file from a scanned copy of the article which can then be downloaded by students. However faculty should submit their lists in advance to ensure the required materials will be available in time for the specific class session. To download the articles the students must enter their name and ID number, an easy process. It is still possible to place items on reserve in print form if this is desired, however these days more and more faculty are choosing the electronic format.

If you have questions please contact Gilles at gpoitras@ggu.edu

FOOD for THOUGHT

Every day we should hear at least one little song, read one good poem, see one exquisite picture, and, if possible, speak a few sensible words.
