MELISSA BEUOY JOINS THE UNIVERSITY LIBRARY

Hello! I am Melissa Beuoy, the new Research Instruction Librarian at the University Library. I recently transferred to the University Library after nearly 2 years at the GGU Law Library. As the Instruction Librarian, I hope to work closely with many students and faculty to ensure that the library's resources are as easy for all to use as possible. I look forward to making in-class presentations on research strategy and database demonstrations. Also, I hope to meet many students at the reference desk as I truly enjoy helping people. If you see me at the desk, please feel free to ask questions, and I will do my best to help! Outside of work, I enjoy yoga, hanging out with my cat, traveling, cooking, and of course, reading!

GETTING READY FOR THE FALL TERM

The University Library staff are here to help GGU faculty prepare for the best Fall Term ever!

Course Development Support

When you are developing curriculum guidance or planning a course, librarians can help you identify resources needed for the course, help you design research assignments for students, and place items from your reading list on print reserve or electronic reserve. We can also put the first chapter of your textbook on electronic reserve, so if students encounter delays in receiving textbooks they have ordered, they can access the first week's readings on electronic reserves. To arrange for material to be placed on reserve or electronic reserve, or for more information about reserves, please contact Gilles Poitras at gpoitras@ggu.edu or call 415-442-7256.

Research and Reference Support for Your Students

In the past, faculty have found that a research instruction session with students increases 1) student satisfaction with assignments, and 2) quality of student research - helping students be competitive academically and professionally. To arrange a research session for your class, please contact Melissa Beuoy at mbeuoy@ggu.edu. You and your students will be glad that you did!

What else can we do to help? Please let us know! Send your suggestions to Janice Carter at jcarter@ggu.edu.

FOOD for THOUGHT

I wanted you to see what real courage is, instead of getting the idea that courage is a man with a gun in his hand. It's when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what.

---Harper Lee (1926 - ), To Kill a Mockingbird, 1960

SITE OF THE MONTH

Would you like to check out movie reviews before actually standing in line or adding a title to your Netflix queue? Are you curious about what reviewers said about vintage flicks?

The Movie Review Query Engine (MRQE). www.mrge.com can help. To quote from the MRQE "about" page:

"The re-launched MRQE aggregates reviews, news, interviews and other material associated to specific movies. MRQE also partners with leading movie blogs so that their content is collected in the MRQE database and searchable by any user."

If you decide to register, you can access movie-specific forums to comment and add your own reviews. Typical sources for reviews include the major newspapers, Roger Ebert, fulvuedrive-in.com, classicfilmguide.com and many others.

Over 67,000 movie titles can be searched. You can access news and reviews of upcoming releases in the UK and US, and you can view lists, including AFI lists of top films.

DATA FOR DECISION: ANALYZING RATIOS FOR A COMPANY WORKSHOP

In response to student requests, the Data for Decision Workshop series this month will focus on analyzing ratios for a company.

The Golden Gate University Library staff team up with Professor Miro Costa, Director of Graduate Department of Operations and Information-Technology Management, Edward S. Ageno School of Business, and the GGU Finance Club, to present this special hands-on workshop on searching the ORBIS database to find ratios for a company and analyzing data using SAS.

Interested individuals are invited to attend this informative workshop. Suggestions for future workshops are encouraged. Contact research instruction librarian Melissa Beuoy at mbeuoy@ggu.edu or the University Library director Janice Carter at jcarter@ggu.edu with your ideas.

WHEN: Monday, August 6, and Monday, August 13, 4:00 - 6:00 PM

WHERE: 536 Mission Street, San Francisco, Lab 4225

RSVP: to askalibrarian@ggu.edu or call the Reference Desk at 415-442-7244.

SUGGESTION BOX

The University Library has increased the number of renewals for items which are checked out from two to three. This means as long as the due date has not passed you can renew online at https://library.ggu.edu:443/patroninfo~S0/ or by phone 415-442-7242, for up to three times.

After that you need to return the item to the Library. We feel that three renewals will give students greater flexibility in using Library materials.

If you find that an item you wish to use is checked out, simply ask the Circulation Desk at the above phone number to place a hold on the item. Items with holds can no longer be renewed. You will be notified when an item you have requested is returned and it will in turn be held for you.

The Update is a regular feature of the University Library's website. If you wish to be added to our mailing list, please contact The Update Editor. Suggestions and questions regarding the newsletter may also be directed to this address.
