UNIVERSITY LIBRARY HOSTS INTERNS FROM SAN JOSE STATE
The University Library's internship program brings students working towards a Master's degree in library science at San Jose State University to intern at GGU. We offer interns a glimpse into our work as business librarians in an academic library, and our interns help with some long-term projects that might otherwise be pushed to the back burner. We have discovered that our interns bring some unique skills to GGU and try to make the most of them while they're here. Our summer intern, Amy Stabler, has worked for many years as an investigator for asbestos litigation. One of her projects here is to look at the data that we collect about our reference questions, to see where we might offer more instructional services on our website. Look for her workshop later this summer on tracking down information that's not readily available through the usual suspects - databases, catalogs, Google, and the rest - for example, on companies that have gone under or been acquired by other corporations.Other intern projects have included cataloging past EMPA capstone papers to make them much easier to find (see http://library.ggu.edu/search/d?SEARCH=Capstone+Papers) for a complete list of the papers that are in our catalog), and offering recommendations for changes to the library's signage. We're delighted to have this talent coming through the library, and look forward to many more successful relationships!

USING THE LEXIS-NEXIS ACADEMIC DATABASE
Using the University Library's Lexis-Nexis Academic database, it's easy to locate regional companies operating within a specific industry. For example, say you want to see a list of companies within the state of California that are in the "Electric Power Generation" industry (i.e., NAICS code 22111). Using Lexis-Nexis Academic, it would only take you a few clicks to compile such a list:
- Go to Lexis-Nexis Academic
- Click the Business tab
- Click Dossier Create a Company List on the left-hand column
- Fill out the search form with:
* Company Type * SIC or NAICS code * Regions/Countries, City/State, etc.
- Click Create
- Review the sample report and then click Next: Customize List
- Select your desired display criteria & click Update Company List
You can then review the results online or you can click Download Select Items to download the data as an Excel-formatted list and manipulate/sort however you like.If you have questions, please contact us! Alternatively, be sure to read the University Library's Research Guides on locating country & industry information.

FOOD for THOUGHT
compiled by Alice Dietrich
TIME
Time is the coin of your life. It is the only coin you have, and only you can determine how it will be spent. Be careful lest you let other people spend it for you.
--Carl SandburgLet him who would enjoy a good future waste none of his present.
--Roger BabsonThe future is something which everyone reaches at the rate of 60 minutes an hour, whatever he does, whoever he is.
--C. S. LewisAnd when is there time to remember, to sift, to weigh, to estimate, to total?
--Tillie OlsenUntil you value yourself, you won't value your time. Until you value your time, you will not do anything with it.
