LIBRARIANS IN THE LOBBY

Old Saint Nick isn't the only one making house calls this month. Librarians will be dropping into GGU lobbies throughout December with goodies of our own to give away (after we sweep the chimneys of course!). We'll be offering free candy and, for those of you getting a head start on your New Year's resolutions, the healthier alternative of fresh veggies. Also rolling around our big bag of gifts are the following treats for all you good little researchers:
  • Research Assistance
  • Appointments with Trained Researchers
  • Cool Bookmarks
  • GGU Folders
So be a good researcher for goodness' sake! And take the time to say "Hello" to your jolly University Library Librarians.

When: Monday - Thursday, December 3 - 6, from 6 - 7 pm
Where: 5th floor lobby, 536 Mission Street, San Francisco

GREEN IDEA OF THE MONTH: Print on both sides of a page

Print on both sides of a page. Using the "duplex" function on office printers, multifunction systems and copiers--especially for documents like e-mail or memos - is a simple way to quickly cut paper use. It saves energy as well.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates say that manufacturing a piece of paper requires 10 times more energy than making a copy.

YOU CAN HELP CLEAN UP THE OIL SPILL

As a result of the November 7 collision of the ship Cosco Busan's with the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, dozens of dead and injured seabirds have been found coated in the viscous, heavy toxic container ship oil. The 58,000-gallon oil spill in the San Francisco Bay is an incident that scientists are already saying could threaten wildlife for years.

In response to the accident, hundreds of concerned Bay Area citizens have volunteered to help with the clean-up. You, too, can if you wish, but before you are qualified to go on the rescue mission, you are required to attend special training classes.

It is important to avoid all contact with the oil as it is a hazerdous substance. Do not attempt to rescue oiled wildlife. This may cause them to go back into contaminated waters. Keep all pets on leash and avoid any area that has been contaminated by the spill.

If you cannot give of your time and energy, you may make a donation instead. All proceeds will go to the cleanup and rescue of wildlife in our bay.

Make sure you check out beach closures before you attempt to go to the beaches for any reason. Refer to current status and updates on beach closures, the spill, links to information about the spill, and clean up efforts from the San Francisco Recreation Area government website at http://www.nps.gov/goga/sf_oil-spill.htm.

For more detailed information on the spill, its consequences, and what you can do about it, check out the following websites:

BAY AREA ANIMAL RESCUE GROUPS

The Bay Area Animal Rescue Groups include the Humane Society, the SPCA, and several other animal welfare organizations.

The Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA is San Mateo's largest and most celebrated animal welfare organization. Programs include adoptions (dogs, cats, small animals and exotic pets -- with a guaranteed home for every healthy dog and cat!), wildlife rehabilitation, education/advocacy, community outreach, rescue of animals in distress and investigation of animal cruelty. Generous gifts of time, resources and funds help treat and find homes for more animals.

The mission of the SAN FRANCISCO SPCA is to save and protect animals, to provide care and treatment, to advocate for their welfare, and to enhance the human-animal bond.

Volunteer opportunities exist for helping animals in need. Many pets suffer through not just the holidays, but every day, alone, in a cage, or on the street. Please consider volunteering at your local animals shelter to walk dogs, play with cats, help with clean up or administrative duties, among other activities. Your dog and cat (and other pet) friends are counting on you. (from the SF SPCA website).

FOOD for THOUGHT

Life is not measured by the number of breathes we take, but by the moments that take our breath away.

PICTURES AT TOP Parol is a traditional Filipino Christmas decoration, a five point star-shaped Christmas lantern, originally made of thin bamboo frames and covered with colored cellophane or with rice paper. There's no greater symbol of the Filipino Christmas spirit than the parol. All through the Christmas season, star-shaped lanterns can be found hanging outside homes and along the streets of cities and small provincial towns, farms and fishing villages. For Filipinos, making a parol, decorating one and lighting it is an expression of shared faith and hope. The parol is a main component in the Filipino celebration of Christmas, which has become a Festival of Lights. MM Del Rosario's article in HubPages offers more information on parols and MarketManila shows you how to make one!

REAL AND SURREAL WORLD HALLOWEEN PARTY COSTUME CONTEST WINNERS

Congratulations to the following winners of the Research for the Real and Surreal World Halloween Party Costume Contest. Each winner was awarded a certificate suitable (or not) for framing, as well as the prize listed below.

For the most research-oriented costume, Karen McRobie, who came as a search engine, received a $20 Starbucks Gift Certificate.

For the most surreal (and perhaps most frightening) costume, Anne Nam, who came as Ted Mavrakos, received a copy of Edward Gorey's The Jumblies.

We changed a category from funniest costume to cutest costume, when we saw Rachel Castillo's daughter, Carmen Leiato, decked out as a duck with bright orange webbed feet. Her prize? Make Way for Ducklings!

Hadi Amjadi told an intriguing story about his costume, and thus won the prize for the costume with the longest tail/tale, --a copy of The Long Tail by Chris Anderson.

In another sense, all who attended events in the Research for the Real World Symposium are winners. Thanks to all who participated!
