REGIONAL SITE VISITS

Last month librarians Melissa Beuoy and Gene Springs visited each of the regional site campuses to talk about the library resources available to each and every GGU student via the University Library homepage. As part of a renewed effort to reach out to the sites, librarians will visit Monterey Bay, Roseville, San Jose, and Walnut Creek each term to provide student, staff, and faculty workshops, in addition to stopping by classes to teach about library resources that can be of use for specific research assignments. Melissa and Gene had a wonderful time at each site getting to know students and faculty, and are looking forward to return engagements in subsequent terms!

If you would like a librarian to stop by your class at a regional site in the summer term or to create a research guide for your cyber course, please contact Melissa Beuoy at mbeuoy@ggu.edu, or send an email to askalibrarian@ggu.edu. Remember, we're here to help you with any and every information and research need!

GREEN IDEA OF THE MONTH: Choose Paper over Plastic and Recyclable over Degradable

What "Paper or plastic?" really boils down to is, "Degradable … or something that's going to stick around for a while?" Which do you choose, and why?

7 out of 10 Safeway customers opt for plastic; 6 out of 10 Giant (East Coast) customers choose plastic over paper.

Paper bags decompose in three months or less, according to the API. If buried under mountains of trash where they are exposed to microorganisms, they decompose faster than if when exposed to sunlight.

In terms of time frames, a plastic bag fully decomposes from (as short as) one year to as long as 240 years.

Complete incineration of plastic bags - made of polyethylene (a derivative of petroleum) is possible, but the substances give off carbon dioxide, a major culprit in the greenhouse effect and global warming.

Until more research is done and standards are set, it may be wise to investigate products labeled "degradable" before buying. Degradable plastics may be seen as contaminants when it comes to recycling because when the degradable version is mixed with regular plastic, it can pollute the plastic resin, the substance that is recycled.

For now, "recycled" appears to be a better choice over "degradable." Certain plastic items, such as trash bags, may end up too dirty to recycle, but others such as milk jugs and soft-drink bottles can be washed and reground.

NOTE: Most of the content above was derived from *Paper or Plastic? by Deborah Boerner, published in American Forests, 1/1/1990. To read the entire article, go to http://www.encyclopedia.com/doc/1G1-8346997.html.

National Park Service, US Department of the Interior

"This is the best tree-lovers monument that could possibly be found in all the forests of the world," declared conservationist John Muir when describing the majestic coast redwoods of Muir Woods.

Muir Woods was designated the 10th National Monument for the United States of America. Although it was the 10th National Monument, it was the first in three very important ways. It was the first time a private individual (William and Elizabeth Kent) donated land to the federal government to create a National Monument. It was the first time a National Monument was created in an urban setting, just 12 miles north of San Francisco. And it was the first time the Antiquities Act of 1906 was used to preserve a living species, the Coast Redwood tree.

Muir Woods Earth Day Celebration is Saturday, February 2, 2008 from 8:30 AM - 1:00 PM (Registration 8-8:30). Come volunteer at our annual Muir Woods Earth Day Celebration. Enjoy the majestic redwoods while helping restore and preserve this spectacular National Park. Projects include planting, weeding, mulching, beach cleanup, and trail maintenance throughout the Redwood Creek Watershed. All participants are invited to stay for lunch and the end of the event. Individuals and groups welcome. It's going to be a wonderful day! For more information and to sign up, contact: http://parksconservancy.org/ or 415-561-3077. ---(from the Muir Woods website)
