Systems Librarian Attends IUG Conference in Denver

The University's Libraries' Systems Librarian, Hadi Amjadi, attended a conference for the Innovative Users Group in Denver in May. Innovative Interfaces is the GGU Libraries' online catalog system. It is the most widely used online catalog system used in libraries worldwide.

About the Innovative conference, Hadi's remarked, "The conference was packed with useful presentations which taught me many valuable features in our system. One practical feature was on setting up our system to collect usage statistics on online databases. In determining useful online databases, we need to collect accurate statistics on the database usage. Using these statistics we can determine which online databases are used the most. This insight should help us make better assessments about acquiring the future databases which will make the student's search complete."

He continued, "From the users' conference, I learned about ways we can change the search interface for our online catalog. A new search interface should improve usability and appearance of the search screens. Making these changes will involve projects to build new pages using cascading style sheets. I plan to build a few of these in the near future."

"I also learned about ways to cleanup records in our online catalog, which should help with yielding better search results as well as ideas for setting up a disaster recovery plan for our library" he added.

To assist with integrating more web features into our online catalog, the library has recently acquired WebBridge from Innovative Interfaces. WebBridge is a product that will boost the users' search results. It offers a smart linking capability, which enables libraries to link together information resources when appropriate. This can include content enrichment such as book-jacket images and book reviews, and free websites related to the records the user is viewing, but can also include linking to the most appropriate copy of full-text journal articles or e-books.

Interlibrary Loan Services

New to GGU? Not new, but curious about a very useful service provided by the University Library? Interlibrary Loan, or as it is sometimes called, Document Delivery is a service offered to currently enrolled students, faculty, and staff. Sometimes books or articles needed for research papers are identified but not available locally. All is not lost! These books or articles may be requested through the Interlibrary Loan Services of the University Library. The library's website has a form for you to fill out and send directly to the Interlibrary Loan specialist Dolores Neese. For your convenience, here is the form: Interlibrary Loan Form.

Your request will usually be processed the same day, and Dolores will notify you when the items arrive. Of course, you may always call the Reference Desk and speak to a librarian about your research needs at 415-442-7244.

Site of the Month

While sitting in Bay Area traffic, do you ponder the costs of auto congestion-fuel and time wasted, length of delays, and then wonder if there's a better urban area in which to commute?
The 2005 Urban Mobility Study (annual, but next one will be published May 2007 using new methodology) at: http://mobility.tamu.edu/ums/ addresses these issues, offering comparisons for about 85 U.S. urban areas.
After reading this, you may dream of living in the Cleveland area, where the 2003 annual delay was only 10 hours versus 72 hours for the second ranking San Francisco-Oakland area.
The Texas Transportation Institute, which publishes the study, also maintains a page entitled "What is Being Done About Congestion" at http://mobility.tamu.edu/ums/resources.stm. If all this is making you gasp for air, then go to http://511.org/ for Bay Area transportation alternatives.

Investment Information in the University Library

This month, the University Library is focusing its Database Spotlight on two of our best known databases: Morningstar and ValueLine. Both databases provide access to current analyst opinion and financial data.

Morningstar tracks mutual funds, stocks and other managed investments. You can screen more than 18,000 stocks and funds using dozens of criteria and access analyst opinions on 1,000 stocks and 2,000 funds.

ValueLine provides investment analysis, research and advice on 1,700 stocks and 90 industries. You can search for research on options, exchange-traded funds and mutual funds.

For more information on these databases, and more the library has to offer, please call us at the Reference Desk at 415-442-7244.

Food for Thought
Keep away from people who try to belittle your ambition. Small people always do that, but the really great make you feel that you, too, can become great.
