FOOD for THOUGHT

compiled by Alice Dietrich

FAILURE

You may be disappointed if you fail, but you are doomed if you don't try. -- Beverly Sills (1929 - )

If you have made mistakes, there is always another chance for you. You may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this thing we call "failure" is not the falling down, but the staying down. --Mary Pickford

A life spent making mistakes is not only more honorable but more useful than a life spent in doing nothing. --George Bernard Shaw

I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life and that is why I succeed. --Michael Jordan

I don't know the key to success, but the key to failure is trying to please everybody. --Bill Cosby (1937 - )

SITE OF THE MONTH

ENERGY STAR
http://www.energystar.gov/

If you are interested in doing your small part to combat energy inefficiency, consider consulting the U.S. Department of Energy's Energy Star website.

Particularly useful is the Energy Star Qualified Products list and search function. (click on "Explore Products" on the main page.) So, for example, if you wish to compare the energy savings of various flat panel TV's that you are considering buying, click on "Televisions" and scroll down to the search boxes to choose your criteria. If green buildings are more your thing, there's lots to read on that, in addition to many other areas where efficient energy management is your goal.

Left to right: Edward Hopper, Amelia Earhart, Mick Jagger, and Arnold Schwartzenegger

STEVEN FOSTER (July 4, 1826 - January 13, 1864) Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; known as the "Father of American Music," pre-eminent songwriter in the United States of the 19th century. His songs, such as Oh! Susanna, Camptown Races, Old Folks at Home, Hard Times Come Again No More, My Old Kentucky Home, Old Black Joe, and Beautiful Dreamer remain popular over 150 years after their composition. GUSTAV MAHLER (July 7, 1860 -May 18,1911), Kalište, Bohemia; Austrian composer and conductor; best known during his own lifetime as one of the leading orchestral and operatic conductors of the day. He has since come to be acknowledged as among the most important late-Romantic composers; primarily composed symphonies and songs; his approach to genre often blurred the lines between orchestral Lied, symphony, and symphonic poem. ELIAS HOWE (July 9, 1819 - October 3, 1867), Spencer, Massachusetts; American inventor and sewing machine pioneer; forced to defend his patent in 1854 when Isaac Singer perfected Howe's machine and was selling it with the same lockstitch that Howe had invented; inducted in 2004 into the United States National Inventors Hall of Fame. OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN II (July 12, 1895 - August 23, 1960), New York City; American writer, producer and director; winner of eight Tony Awards; twice awarded an Academy Award for "Best Original Song"; much of his work considered to be part of the unofficial "Great American Songbook"; wrote an estimated 850 songs; was lyricist and playwright in his partnerships with famous composers including Jerome Kern, Vincent Youmans, Rudolf Friml and Sigmund Romberg; most famous collaboration was with Richard Rodgers. EDWARD HOPPER (July 22, 1882 - May 15, 1967), Nyack, New York; prominent American realist painter and printmaker. While most popularly known for his oil paintings, he was equally proficient as a watercolorist and printmaker in etching. In both his urban and rural scenes, his spare and finely calculated renderings reflected his personal vision of modern American life. AMELIA EARHART (July 24, 1897 - missing July 2, 1937; declared dead January 5, 1939), Atchison, Kansas; noted American aviation pioneer and author. Earhart was the first woman to receive the Distinguished Flying Cross, awarded for becoming the first aviatrix to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. She set many other records, wrote best-selling books about her flying experiences, and was instrumental in the formation of "The Ninety-Nines," an organization for female pilots. Earhart disappeared over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island during an attempt to make a circumnativational flight of the globe in 1937. SIR MICK JAGGER (July 26, 1943 - ), Dartford, Kent; Golden Globe and Grammy Award winning English singer, songwriter and occasional actor; best known for his work as lead vocalist of The Rolling Stones; by the mid-1960s the group had evolved into a world-class rock band. ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER (July 30, 1947 - ), Thal, Austria; Austrian American bodybuilder, actor, businessman, and politician; currently serving as the 38th Governor of the state of California. Schwarzenegger was awarded title of Mr. Universe at 22 and went on to win the Mr. Olympia contest seven times; remains a prominent face in the bodybuilding sport; is also a Hollywood action film icon, noted for his lead roles in films such as Conan the Barbarian and The Terminator.

Above, left to right: Self-Portrait, Nighthawks, Chop Suey, Compartment Car 293, Cape Cod Evening, Cape Cod Morning, and Rooms by the Sea. All works by Edward Hopper.

Christian de Portzamparc (born May 5, 1944 in Casablanca, Morocco) French architect and urban planner; graduated from the Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts in Paris in 1970; since profoundly implicated in the research of form and meaning, as well as being a constructer. His work focuses on research over speculation and concerns the quality of life. Maintains that aesthetics are conditioned by ethics and that we have too often dissociated one from the other.

In 1994 Christian de Portzamparc became the first French architect to be awarded the prestigious Pritzker Architectural Prize. Today, he continues his research work through projects that are under way around the world, expressing his freshness, pleasure and passion through a perfectionism that has characterized his work from the beginning.
