Public Services LIbrarian Rob Bain Leaves University Library

With joy for him and sadness for us, we say farewell to Rob Bain, Public Services Librarian extraordinaire, who brought GGU images of Leaping Librarians and Mud Baths for the Mind. It would be impossible to list all the contributions Rob has made to the University Library in his short time here. Quietly, tactfully, and with humor he found ways to enhance service and assessment. He brought Instant Messaging to the University Library, developed a portal for Reference Desk staff, and created new assessment tools for reference and research instruction. We will miss him greatly, and we take him at his word when he says he will come back and visit us. Rob's last day on the staff at GGU will be June 4. He will be leaving GGU to become webmaster for an investment firm in the Bay Area. We wish him all the best! Please join us for his farewell party, June 4, from 2 - 4 pm in the Atrium on the sixth floor at 536 Mission Street. (J. Carter)

"I'm leaving with fond memories of my time at GGU and of the wonderful people that I've been lucky enough to meet here. The students, faculty, and my colleagues in the library have all made me feel right at home and I thank you all for your kindness. My departure brings with it a mixture of sadness and excitement as I am both saying goodbye to GGU and embarking on a new career in web development. I wish you all the best of luck and hope you will continue to enjoy the great resources and services that our hard-working librarians offer to the GGU community everyday!" --Rob Bain

HELP US SAVE A TREE! (or THREE ...)

The University Library is asking you to help us conserve our natural resources by being mindful and judicious when using the library's printing services. Before clicking the 'Print' button, please keep in mind the following guidelines to help us achieve the most efficient and ethical use of our paper supply:
  • Use double-sided printing when the option is available.
  • Limit print jobs to 30 pages at a time. This will help ensure that all users' print jobs will be completed in a timely manner.
  • Read articles online when possible.
  • Save articles to your removable storage unit or email them to yourself for future use.
  • When printing from the web, copy material into a Word document, delete unnecessary images and text, and adjust font size and margins to use less space.
  • Limit the printing or copying of material from books to one chapter or less.
It is important to adhere to copyright laws when reproducing the works of others. If you have concerns about the ethical use of copyrighted material, please consult a librarian or visit our Copyright Policy page.

Are you having trouble keeping track of all of your references for a research project? Does compiling a bibliography take away from your time to proofread and edit your paper? Are you confused about what constitutes proper citation format? RefWorks can help you with each of these issues, and many more.

RefWorks is an online bibliographic management software. What that means is that it is a database, accessible from any computer with internet access, where you can store, manage, and arrange references you are using for any given research project. Does generating a bibliography in proper citation format at the click of a mouse sound good? Would you like to be able to have instant access to that article you used two terms ago? If so, then give RefWorks a try at the University Library's Research Assistance page.

If you have any questions about how to use RefWorks, please contact the Reference Desk (415-442-7244) to schedule a workshop. This brief time investment up front can save you hours of work at the end of your research project. Also keep an eye out for workshops during the term, both here in the library and through webcasts.

SITE OF THE MONTH

This database is designed to offer information on over 7,000 consumer products in categories such as auto products, pesticides, landscape and home maintenance, pet care and arts/crafts. Each record for a specific brand lists chemical ingredients (and the percentages), acute and chronic health effects of these ingredients, the manufacturer and other comments about the chemicals. Product recalls and a glossary are other components of the site. A useful feature is the ability to cross-reference within the database's records other products by the same manufacturer and other products with similar usage or ingredients.

The University Library provides access to several research databases but given how many there are it's often difficult to know which database to use for a specific information need. This article is the first in a series that will focus on a single database and identify the type of content it provides.

This month: EBSCOhost

EBSCOhost is actually a service that provides access to over ten different topic-specific databases. All of the databases available through EBSCOhost share a common search interface that is the same regardless of which EBSCOhost database you use.

Most of us at GGU are familiar with EBSCOhost's Business Source Complete database, but EBSCOhost also provides other databases:

Academic Search Elite - A multi-disciplinary database that covers virtually every area of academic study.

Regional Business News - Comprehensive full text coverage for regional business publications from all metropolitan and rural areas within the United States.

Newspaper Source - Newspaper Source provides cover-to-cover full text for 25 national & international newspapers as well as selective full text for more than 335 regional U.S. newspapers.

PsycARTICLES - The definitive source of full-text, peer-reviewed scholarly and scientific articles in psychology.

Mental Measurements Yearbook - Contains information essential for a complete evaluation of test products within such diverse areas as psychology, education, business, and leadership.

ERIC - The Educational Resource Information Center, provides access to education literature and resources.

Health Source: Consumer Edition - Provides information on many health topics including the medical sciences, food sciences and nutrition, childcare, sports medicine and general health.

Alt HealthWatch - Focuses on the many perspectives of complementary, holistic and integrated approaches to health care and wellness.

GreenFILE - A collection of scholarly, government and general-interest titles covering topics such as global warming, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, recycling, and more.

To search for information within any of these databases, click the "EBSCO" link on the University Library databases page and then click on the name of the EBSCOhost database that you want to explore. You may also switch to any other EBSCOhost database at any time by clicking the "Choose Database" tab at the top of the screen and selecting the desired database.

EBSCOhost will be updating their standard search interface this July, so be sure to catch a preview of the exciting changes by visiting the EBSCOhost 2.0 preview site

If you have any questions about EBSCOhost or need help finding information with it, please stop by the reference desk for a demonstration. You can also find online tutorials on the EBSCOhost web site at: http://support.ebsco.com/training/tutorials.php

The DATA DOWNLOAD

What is data? According to http://www.merriam-webster.com, data is defined as "factual information (as measurements or statistics) used as a basis for reasoning, discussion, or calculation." Data comes in many forms and can be used, analyzed, and applied in countless ways. The University Library provides access to several different sources of data, from financial and trade data to census information and health statistics - these data sources are available in myriad formats, with many being in print and an ever-increasing number available online. Visit the University Library's select collection of online statistical sources here on the Databases by Content page. Check back often, as there will be new sources added regularly.

If you have any questions about data, be it where to find it, how to access it, or how best to use it in your research, contact the Reference Desk (415-442-7244). The Data Download will be a regular feature in The Update, so make sure to check back monthly for data research tips and highlighted resources. Also, please feel free to send an email to Gene Springs gsprings@ggu.edu if you have any special requests for types of data to be featured here.

Help Us Help You Navigate the University Library!

Ever feel when you are looking for a highway exit that the signs are created by people who already know the area, rather than those who are seeking direction?

This summer, library staff members are rethinking library signage. Walt Stevenson, Professor of Management and Communications, Undergraduate Programs, Ageno School of Business, got us off to a great start by conducting a Lego Serious Play session with library staff, doctoral students Judy Lee and Wendy Giblin; Chair of the Marketing Department in the Ageno School of Business, Blodwen Tarter; and GGU Marketing & Communications Associate Director, Susie Fong. We gained a lot from their insights, and we thank them for their participation. Now we want to hear from you!

We need your help. Please let us know your suggestions for how the University Library can use signage and other navigational aids to make the University Library easier to use. Please put your suggestions in the suggestion boxes in the library, or e-mail them to jcarter@ggu.edu.

PICTURES ON TOP: Fallingwater shown in spring, fall and winter; one of the world's most famous houses designed by Frank Lloyd Wright in 1935 as the weekend retreat for Pittsburgh department store owner Edgar J. Kaufmann, in rural southwestern Pennsylvania.

"Hailed by TIME magazine shortly after its completion as Wright's "most beautiful job," the home inspired Ayn Rand's novel The Fountainhead, and is listed among Smithsonian magazine's Life List of 28 places "to visit before ...it's too late." (wikipedia)

"… (Wright) sends out free-floating platforms audaciously over a small waterfall and anchors them in the natural rock. Something of the prairie house is here still; and we might also detect a grudging recognition of the International Style in the interlocking geometry of the planes and the flat, textureless surface of the main shelves. But the house is thoroughly fused with its site and, inside, the rough stone walls and the flagged floors are of an elemental ruggedness." -(Spiro Kostof. A History of Architecture, Settings and Rituals; from Great Buildings Collection).
