Three Librarians Join the University Library

The University Library is delighted to introduce you to three librarians, Jeffrey Marzluft, Sarah Marks and Trent Garcia, who have recently joined the library staff. You may have already met them as they spent little time getting involved with the many services the library offers. Having quickly absorbed their new duties, they have already interfaced with students, faculty and staff. These new librarians participate in training sessions and workshops led by our Reference and Instruction Librarian, Christina Calavano. On any given day you are likely to see at least one of our new staff at the Reference Desk, ready to assist you.

The library invites you to come and meet our new staff members. They would like to expose you to the many useful resources and helpful research tools available to you at the library, and they are excited at the prospect of enhancing your academic experience at Golden Gate University.

Jeffrey E. Marzluft - Web and Reference Librarian. Jeffrey comes to us from Maui Community College, Hawaii where he worked for the past three years. As the Public Services Librarian, he supervised all areas of a library's public services including reference, instruction, and circulation.

"I look forward to working with the students of GGU," Jeffrey comments. "There are some incredibly powerful databases and information sources here and I hope I can get the students and faculty excited about using them. As the Web Librarian, I hope to build an efficient and effective library website that will help increase library usage as well as reinforce the value of library to the university community."

Sarah Marks Reference and Electronic Resources Librarian. Sarah previously worked at Saint Mary's College and Stanford University. She received her Master of Library and Information Science degree from San Jose State University and BA from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

"I'm eager to help students understand the tools for finding information. Some of my interests include Internet searching, web design, xml and metadata, as well as providing excellent service to our great students!" Sarah adds, "I've already learned a lot from the students at GGU and look forward to working with all of you as you work on getting your degree." Sarah is also interested in psychology, human resources management, and public administration.

Trent Garcia - Reference Librarian.
"I would like to see closer communications between the library and faculty. In particular, I'm interested in how the library can assist faculty in supporting curriculum by providing resources," Trent states. "I hope to be involved in more outreach to students and faculty, informing them of library resources and services."

Prior to joining the University Library staff, Trent served four years as the Knowledge and Information Manager for McKeany-Flavell, a commodities ingredients consulting company in Oakland, CA. Before that, he was the Producer/Information Analyst for the Deja.com website in New York City.

Trent obtained his M.L.I.S. from San Jose State University where he was awarded an academic scholarship from the California State Library. His undergraduate degree is in Experimental Psychology. Trent's professional interests include: organization of digital information; information-seeking behavior; database design; and information literacy.

Food For Thought

If you have an apple and I have an apple and we exchange apples then you and I will still each have one apple. But if you have an idea and I have an idea and we exchange these ideas, then each of us will have two ideas.

Library Workshops Spotlight Emerald and BNA Human Resources Databases

Every month the library will be highlighting one of our databases that you might not be using, that might be just what you are looking for! February's spotlight is on the Emerald Fulltext database; spotlight for March is BNA's Human Resources.

Emerald is a major publisher of management and technology journals, and this database offers our students full access to 110 of those journals. This database also offers a section for people who would like to get their own research published, and offers tips on how to do that.

BNA's Human Resources Library database includes policy and practice information on a variety of workplace issues, and offers guides to both federal and state compliance info. It is organized by topic, and very easy to search.

Interlibrary Loan Services

New to GGU? Not new, but curious about a very useful service provided by the University Library? Interlibrary Loan, or as it is sometimes called, Document Delivery is a service offered to currently enrolled students, faculty, and staff. Sometimes books or articles needed for research papers are identified but not available locally. All is not lost! These books or articles may be requested through the Interlibrary Loan Services of the University Library. The library's website has a form for you to fill out and send directly to the Interlibrary Loan specialist, Dolores Neese. For your convenience, here is the link to the Interlibrary Loan Form

Your request will usually be processed the same day, and Dolores will notify you when the items arrive. Of course, you may always call the Reference Desk and speak to a librarian about your research needs at 415-442-7244.

A Musical Offering: Bach's Lunch

The UL staff invites the University community to join in the celebration of this extraordinary musician and the coming of Spring. To learn more about J.S. Bach, go to http://www.jsbach.org.
