LIBRARY IMPLEMENTS NEW SERVICE FOR BORROWERS

As a courtesy and in response to student requests to be alerted to soon-to-become due borrowed materials, Gilles Poitras, University Library Access Services Librarian, announced that both GGU Libraries have begun a new and proactive service: that of sending out reminders when checked out materials are to soon become due. Rather than wait for an item to become overdue and then send out overdue notices, the libraries are sending out reminders via e-mail. This allows the borrower to return items on time and/or to request renewal of the borrowed material. (Note that not all items are renewable. Please check with the appropriate library.)

If you wish to renew an item, please call the library from which you borrowed the item:

GGU Law Library: 415-442-6680
GGG University Library: 415-442-7242

It is hoped that this new service will enhance the borrower's positive experience with the GGU libraries and of course, maybe save the user some overdue fines!

The University Library appreciates suggestions on how it can further improve its services. We give serious consideration to useful ideas and will try to implement them whenever doable.

GOT BOOKS?

The University Library encourages donations as a way to augment the book collection. While we do not typically purchase textbooks for the stacks, any recent faculty review copies that are unwanted would also be greatly appreciated.

Due to space constraints, we cannot usually add items that are already on the shelves or are not relevant to curriculum or reference needs. The library reserves the right to decline acceptance of a donation or to sell or donate any unneeded materials as seems appropriate. If there are any questions about whether we would like to receive a donation, please feel free to contact Larry Burg at 415-442-7250.

With the great assistance of the University Advancement and the Marketing and Public Relations Departments, we now have a new donation form that will make the process of receiving a receipt simpler. Donations are tax deductible, although you should consult a tax professional for questions about such non-cash deductions. Please note that you, as the donor, need to provide the dollar value of your gift; the Library does not assess values.

Just drop off your donation at either the Circulation or Reference desks and ask for a donation form to fill out and a receipt to carry away. Thanks for all your future gifts!

Student Success & Leadership Workshop Series: WORK-LIFE BALANCE

by Michael Anne Conley
Clinical Director, Counseling Services
Guest Contributor

The dividing line between work and the rest of our lives used to be straightforward. Work was expected, for sure, yet time for leisure, friends and family was taken for granted as well.

In the late 20th Century, work activities and performance pressures tended to crowd out other things that matter, such as time with family, participation in community activities, voluntary work, personal development, leisure and recreation. By the 21st Century, true success comes with balancing work with the rest of our lives.

Here at GGU, the goal of the Work /Life Balance workshops is to help you manage your life more effectively in this busy, stressed out world, so you can sustain yourself in a way that works best for you, your family and your friends . For students, that includes planning your academic programs wisely so you can meet the career goals that brought you to Golden Gate University in the first place. These programs are also open to staff and faculty, so that you can benefit as well, and also become aware of how these seminars can help our GGU students succeed.

Hosted by the Office of Student Affairs, the Student Success & Leadership series offers these Work/Life Balance workshops to help students plan their strategies for managing school, work and personal life. Becoming a Corporate Athlete, Visioning & Goal-Setting, Time & Energy Management, Stress Management.

For further information on these and other workshops that support work/life balance issues, contact or Counseling Services at 415-442-6578 or e-mail cs@ggu.edu.

BACK ISSUES of

SITE OF THE MONTH

Need a restaurant review site where lots of knowledgeable foodies and just plain eaters contribute and no restaurant or food gets a 100% thumbs up rating? Chowhound lets you search by restaurant name or any keyword to come up with comments on posts requesting restaurant suggestions or assistance in locating specific foods. Other boards exist for different region of the US and the world. Recent postings run like: "Zankou-style chicken in Bay Area?", "If it's Saturday, it must be Cauliflower" and "Romantic Mediterranean in SF?"

Other city recommendation sites, like Yelp! , have restaurant reviews from posters, but Chowhound is well-organized, informative, tolerant of 'novice' requests and full of comments by experienced foodies.

Need a recommendation for the best dim-sum palace within 1 mile of your office, an answer to a "best mushroom restaurants" query or tips on "Maui-style shrimp chips sightings"? Try chowing down on Chowhound.

FOOD for THOUGHT

In Japan, employees occasionally work themselves to death. It's called Karoshi. I don't want that to happen to anybody in my department. The trick is to take a break as soon as you see a bright light and hear dead relatives beckon.
