UNIVERSITY LIBRARY BOOK SALE - ANOTHER BIG SUCCESS!
Once again, the University Library Book Sale scored another outstanding success. The sale, held October 23-25 at the San Francisco home site, saw hundreds of books quickly snatched up by students, faculty and staff in the short period of three days. Buyers were amazed by the unbelievably low prices. Last year's $110-textbook on databases sold for $4; another brand new $85-text on marketing went for $2. On the last day of the sale, everything was priced at half off, so a current, perfectly good book on negotiation strategy went for $0.50! Buyers were happy with their thrifty purchases and went away with the satisfaction that they had supported their library. The Library is happy its books have been passed on to appreciative readers and recycled in the most resourceful way. With its five book sales so far, the University Library has deservedly become one of the most sought-after events of the year for the book-loving Golden Gate University academic community. The University Library wishes to thank all of you who have made this sale a smashing success. Thank you! We look forward to seeing you all at the next Book Sale!
PROFILE
Jim Downey
Adjunct Professor
Operations and Supply Chain Management
The first thing you can't help but notice about Jim Downey is his boundless enthusiasm. As he speaks, his enthusiasm intensifies as he reflects on work, teaching, learning, and their inherent rewards. Never dull for a moment, Jim speaks with a special kind of confidence. A sparkle in his voice and an optimistic quality clearly say in real world terms that nothing should be impossible if you put your heart and mind into it. Obviously, this includes: a realistic, intelligent plan; an unwavering resolve to do whatever is required to achieve this goal; resourcefulness to find the proper tools for the job and how to use them skillfully; and, focus, tenacity, and patience to see the project through. Easier said then done, you might think, but Jim doesn't think so; he knows so.Jim is a self-made man, the very example of his pragmatic philosophy. Only by practicing what he believes is why he is where he now is. A successful businessman, Jim is president and CEO of Castles Information Network www.castles.com, a Vacaville-based ISP. It's a respectable and successful technology company that provides all types of business services, including Internet access, web deign/hosting and consulting services including business strategies, technical business plans, organizational plans, peripheral support, etc. to all sizes of business establishments. In his Operations classes Jim emphasizes the practical aspect of the course. After creating an intelligent plan, thorough understanding of the surrounding synergistic operations is critical. You must be willing to roll up your sleeves and put your nose to the grindstone if necessary. In addition, you must keep abreast of new and better resources and tools; stay focused, resolute, open-minded, optimistic, dedicated to the task at hand. You cannot fail; you are bound to succeed. At least this is what Jim believes.Jim's passion for teaching is totally transparent. He derives much knowledge and encouragement from his students. He tells of all the wonderful and interesting projects his students have done and all the papers they've written about things they've discovered. Since the students number many more than himself, he gets back that many more perspectives and discoveries than he would otherwise. He thoroughly enjoys this exchange of teaching his students his "practitioner" approach to operations and their show of proof that they have learned how to apply these valuable lessons in the real life arena. Ever grateful to GGU for offering him the opportunity to give back by way of his students, Jim has created a truly win-win situation by his engaging philosophy on life and work.

Interested in volunteering your time with a local charity or non-profit organization? Here are some suggestions for locating available opportunities near your home or work. The following websites post volunteer openings:
Hands On Bay Area and Volunteer Center of San Francisco (serving SF and San Mateo counties).
VolunteerMatch is a nationwide service, but you can specify local opportunities in your searches. Some of these sites may also provide links to get more information about the non-profit agency and allow you to donate directly.Another method is to identify local organizations that you can approach directly to see if they would accept volunteers. San Francisco Public Library maintains a database, accessible from their home page, called Community Services Directory. It is a comprehensive listing of community organizations and the services they provide to people in San Francisco and is searchable in several different ways.Available via Berkeley Public Library, Berkeley Information Network lists about 3400 organizations that serve Berkeley residents. Check your own county library to see if they maintain a similar directory.
