UNIVERSITY LIBRARY BOOKSALE - OCT. 23-25

The much-anticipated University Library Book Sale has been scheduled for three days, starting Monday, October 23 through Wednesday, October 25. The sale will be held in the Fourth Floor Lobby, 536 Mission Street, San Francisco, from 11 AM to 7:00 PM each day.

The books sold include donated books which are duplicates of books already in the library or books on subjects the Library does not cover in its collection. Sale books also include books which have been withdrawn from the collection because they are outdated, or because the library has newer editions or copies in better physical condition.

The books cover a wide variety of subjects, including business, economics, history, literature, social sciences, information technology, communication, the arts and many others. Most sale books will be priced in the $1-$3 range each; special items will be individually priced.

Reference/Collection Development Librarian Larry Burg who has managed the last four book sales, collects, sorts and determines which items are suitable for the sale--a continuous, year-long process. If you wish to donate items to the Library for possible inclusion in the book sale or for the library's permanent collection, please contact Larry Burg at lburg@ggu.edu. A receipt (for tax purposes) will be issued to the donor when requested.

Do come to the University Library Book Sale! You'll never find a better bargain for the $40 book you've always wanted but wouldn't buy because it was way overpriced. The University Library Book Sale may just have that very same book for under $10.00! Now where will you ever find such a buy?

INTERLIBRARY LOAN NEWS

Now that you have started to work on class assignments and projects, perhaps you have located articles and books that are outside of the University Library's collection. Never fear, Interlibrary Loan is here! To request an article or book, just click on http://www.ggu.edu/forms/library_document_request.jsp on the library's homepage, and fill out a request with your citation information. The request will usually be processed within 24 hours, and you will be notified when the requested material arrives.

Remember to call the library reference desk for any of your research needs, including Interlibrary Loan.

RESERVE TIPS for FACULTY

How do I request an item be placed on reserve? You request this from the Circulation Department. Presently the easiest way is to email the Access Services Librarian, Gilles Poitras, gpoitras@ggu.edu. Please include as much information as possible; do not use abbreviations as these can delay the processing.

Restrictions on reserves. We cannot put a substantial portion of a book on reserve without written permission from the copyright holder. However we can put a chapter from a book, an essay or a magazine article on reserve.

What are electronic reserves? Instead of a paper copy on reserve an electronic copy can be made available via the Library Catalog for your students.

How long does it take to get an item on reserve? We prefer requests be submitted at least two weeks in advance. We can usually process the request in a few days. In some cases it may take longer to obtain a copy on Inter-Library Loan and we cannot guarantee those will be available when needed.

How does the Library obtain the items? If the item in the collection, in our databases or on the web we will process it quickly. For items not here we will request a copy via Inter-Library Loan.

How do my students/I access these documents? Go to the library catalog, library.ggu.edu, at the bottom of the left column there are links for Course Reserves. If the item is on Electronic Reserve it can be downloaded. If it is a paper copy one has to come into the Library to use it.

Can I directly link to Electronic Reserves from my web page? Yes. We advise adding one link to the page at: http://library.ggu.edu/search/r.

BACK ISSUES of

SITE OF THE MONTH
BusinessJournalism.org
If you do any kind of business research - for class, for your own use or for publication - you may find businessjournalism.org to be a very insightful resource. It is run by the Donald W. Reynolds National Center for Business Journalism, based at the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, Arizona State University.
Why should you as the consumer of business journalism care about this site, identified as "commentary, training and resources for those who write about business?" The Center's director notes: "Some of the biggest stories and personalities are in business these days…Business stories are important because they affect people's lives, and what you cover is very worthwhile…"
If you can look at business (or any subject) with a critical eye and understand the approaches of competent, ethical business writers, you may be able to better interpret for yourself what you read and understand the meanings behind corporate announcements, actions and consequences.
Articles written by top business writers affiliated with the site, include such titles as: "Stock Analyst Controversy Forces Business Journalists to Do Better Job"; "Sarbanes-Oxley impact extends far beyond public companies"; "Sports Business Offers Compelling Story Lines"; "Reporters Find Ways to Relate SEC Headlines to Average Readers"; and "Magazines Offer Retirement Advice Amid Changing Landscape."
And don't miss "Roush Rant" by Chris Roush, a University of North Carolina professor's take on trends in business journalism.

FOOD for THOUGHT

The society which scorns excellence in plumbing because plumbing is a humble activity, and tolerates shoddiness in philosophy because philosophy is an exalted activity, will have neither good plumbing nor good philosophy. Neither its pipes nor its theories will hold water.
