The University Library Welcomes Three New Librarians

Three librarians have joined the University Library staff. Filling in the vacancies left by three other departing librarians earlier in July this year, Rob Bain, Daina Dickman and Gene Springs are now the library's new Public Services, Web and Electronic Resources Librarians, respectively. Aside from their special designations, all three are also reference librarians.

The University Library invites you to meet its new staff members. They are eager to meet you and to show you the many resources and research tools the library has to offer you. They would like to help make your Golden Gate University academic experience a rich, rewarding and successful one.

ROB BAIN
Public Services and Reference Librarian

Rob arrives at GGU from the Hoosier State, where he recently completed dual master's degrees in Library Science and Information Science at Indiana University. He is excited about meeting students and faculty, and introducing them to all of the wonderful resources that University Library has to offer.

"I really enjoy seeing the look of relief on a patron's face when I'm able to show them how to find that critical piece of information that's been eluding them," he says. "That's the most gratifying aspect of librarianship for me."

In his spare time, Rob consumes books like most people consume oxygen. He also enjoys cooking, developing web sites, and is looking forward to dusting off his snowboard this winter.

GENE SPRINGS
Web and Reference Librarian.

Gene comes to GGU from Duke University in North Carolina, where he interned providing business and financial reference and supported social science data research and analysis. Gene received his M.S.L.S. from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he conducted research on government information and publications.

"I am really looking forward to strengthening the relationship between the library and the university community through a dynamic and intuitive library web site. Also, I am excited to assist faculty and students with research questions using the myriad resources available in the library, and to fortify relationships with the university's academic departments. Additionally, I look forward to promoting, and teaching about, the many useful and powerful databases we have available through the library web site."

When he's not in the library, Gene enjoys reading, films, attending concerts, exploring the Bay Area, and camping/hiking.

DAINA DICKMAN
Electronic Resources Librarian.

Daina Dickman is the new Electronic Resources Librarian. She was most recently employed as a Library Assistant and Cataloger at the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. She has also worked in various capacities for libraries in the University of California system and public libraries in Columbus, Ohio. She recently completed her MLIS at San Jose State University and has a MA in Comparative Studies from Ohio State University and a BA in Political Science and English from UC Berkeley.

Her favorite parts of being a librarian are helping new library users and answering reference questions.

She enjoys biking, crafts, music, local history and is a long time volunteer Health Educator at the Women's Community Clinic in the Panhandle. She lives in a huge painted Victorian in the Western Addition with seven roommates and her pet rat Claire.

The University Library is giving YOU the opportunity to be the boss in October! All month we'll be taking orders from students and faculty about how we can best serve your research and information needs. Would you like a workshop on how to use Google more effectively? What about a handy worksheet on how to evaluate a Wikipedia article? Your input will be our guide for developing workshops and other library services for the month of November. FOOD for THOUGHT

The colossal misunderstanding of our time is the assumption that insight will work with people who are unmotivated to change. Communication does not depend on syntax, or eloquence, or rhetoric, or articulation but on the emotional context in which the message is being heard. People can only hear you when they are moving toward you, and they are not likely to when your words are pursuing them. Even the choicest words lose their power when they are used to overpower. Attitudes are the real figures of speech.
