The purpose of this course is to help students understand the value of mathematical thinking and become mindful about the application of mathematical reasoning and thinking to their own decision-making process in real life. Students will use real data from a variety of disciplines and current events to explore the relevance of mathematical thinking as a tool for making scientific and informed decisions. Specific applications to daily life are introduced, including analytic and holistic thinking, problem solving, spatial thinking, and probability as a basis for quantitative literacy. Students will explore the value of numeracy, mathematical thinking, the use of data and quantitative knowledge in professional settings within a variety of organizational contexts (including private, public, community, nonprofit, and military contexts). This course also provides students with a background in quantitative literacy that enables them to participate meaningfully in situations that require scientifically determined decisions. Course content and topics will be updated regularly based on current events. Prerequisite: Grade of C- or better in MATH 10 (or its equivalent) or satisfactory results on the Math Placement Test.
