Day One: Wednesday, August 14

Cyber Threats: It’s not if, but when?! A cyber threat is a malicious attempt by an individual or organization to gain access to your computing systems. Will your personal data be compromised? Will your company be infiltrated? Will you be held hostage for ransom or data? What will it cost you in dollars, lost productivity, stress and sense of well-being?

  • Cyber breaches are projected to cost the global economy $2.1 trillion by 2019, more than quadrupling the cost since 2015.
  • The average cost of a malware attack on a company is estimated to be $2.4 million; the average cost of a ransomware attack on businesses in 2017 was approximately $133,000.
  • Attacks continue to grow at a staggering rate, with industry predictions that one new organization will fall victim to ransomware every 14 seconds in 2019, and every 11 seconds by 2021.

This eye-opening discussion explores some of the most serious cyber threats out there and outlines the steps that can be taken to minimize risks as individuals, businesses of any size, governments and organizations.

Co-occurring disorders: We see it on the news, on our streets, in our communities, in our families and for some, even in our workplaces. These are conditions in which an individual has a mental illness co-existing with a substance abuse disorder. Consider these facts:

  • According to the National Institute of Mental Health, nearly 1 in 5 U.S. adults live with a mental health illness of some kind.
  • For young adults ages 18-25, 1 in 4 live with a mental health illness.
  • On the substance abuse use side, nearly 1 in 7 individuals in the U.S. ages 12 and older are struggling with a substance use problem.
  • Significant data shows that addiction impacts individuals from all socio-economic strata.

Co-occurring disorders compound tragedies. The vast majority of violent crimes are committed by individuals under the influence of alcohol. It is well-documented how mental illness has been a factor in many mass shooting incidents. If we continue to ignore the signs that people need support, then we will continue to see tragic incidents occur, adversely affecting more and more people directly and indirectly.

Whatever your interests may be, and wherever your career may take you, it is critical to understand how mental health and substance use impact individuals and families. Join us for a combination of experiential and lecture-style training to shed light on this important and prevalent issue in our society.

Steve Diamond currently holds a Master’s Degree in Mental Health Counseling and a Bachelor’s Degree in Family and Human Services with a minor in Substance Abuse Prevention. Data, data, data! In today’s world of data analytics, every piece of data you touch in a corporate enterprise can come back to haunt you. Yikes! There is so much data that can be searched and analyzed; how is this data searched so fast? Did you know that lawyers and compliance officers use eDiscovery (electronic discovery for documents) to collect and analyze data from a wide variety of sources, all relevant and admissible in a court of law. It’s effective, but not as complicated as you think! You should know about this if you are in business, as the best business defense is a good offense.

This illuminating seminar walks you through the processes and forms of technology that enable corporate compliance, and provides tips on how you can minimize violations while protecting yourself and your company. As part of the Grande Finale, Adam will bring it all together with a live mock investigation using enterprise-grade eDiscovery of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) release of Hillary Clinton’s notorious emails.

Adam manages marketing programs for OpenText Discovery, where his projects have included drafting an amicus brief on the use of automated redactions, partnering with a law firm to design and promote new AI applications, and curating a case law database of all published court orders impacting the use of machine learning in eDiscovery (available at www.predictivecoding.com).

Adam is also a McCarthy Institute Senior Research Fellow at Golden Gate University, where he helps law students research, write, and publish original scholarship. He joined Recommind in 2014 prior to its acquisition by OpenText in 2016. Before that, Adam was an eDiscovery analyst at a Fortune 500 company and an associate consultant focused on complex trademark/patent disputes. Adam received his JD and MBA from the University of San Francisco and his BA from New York University.
