Adjunct professor Jonathan Van Loo is a partner at Belcher, Smolen & Van Loo LLP.  He is a transactional tax lawyer with a broad range of experience, including some experience with tax controversy and IRS audits. Jon’s current practice focuses on the tax aspects of M&A, partnership tax, venture capital investing, blockchain companies, and hedge fund and investment funds. Recently, Jon has focused on tax issues for cryptocurrency and the blockchain industry.  Jon actively writes and publishes on various tax issues, including co-authoring the first series of articles on the tax treatment of litigation financing in Tax Notes and, more recently, several posts on various cryptocurrency tax issues.

Jon received his law degree from Northwestern Law School, magna cum laude. He graduated from the University of Chicago and attended graduate school in political science at Duke University, where he was a James B. Duke fellow. He is a member of the bar in California and New York.
