Barbara Karlin has been a professor in the Braden School of Taxation at Golden Gate University since 1983. She was Dean of the Braden School of Taxation from 1997-2002 and Dean of the Ageno School of Business from 1999-2002. In 2002, Barbara became the university’s Vice President of Academic Affairs where she was responsible for all aspects of the university other than the law school and university business functions. She served as Vice President for 18 years through April 2020. The university awarded her the status of Vice President Emerita.

She has extensive experience reviewing institutions on behalf of the WASC Senior University and Colleges Commission (WSCUC), the organization that accredits universities in California. Barbara was elected and served as a WSCUC commissioner from 2010-2016. Her experience in accreditation established her as an expert in assessing quality and rigor in educational programs. Barbara is on the Board of Trustees of the Presidio Graduate School.

Barbara has written and presented extensively on the subject of tax research and authored the textbook Tax Research with four editions published by Prentice Hall and Pearson. In addition, she is a co-author of the treatise entitled Tax Exempt Investments in United States Reality, published by CCH.

She acquired her CPA license while employed in the San Francisco tax department of Coopers & Lybrand. In addition, Barbara holds an LLM in Taxation from Golden Gate University and a JD from Hastings College of the Law. She earned her bachelor’s degree from Stanford University.
